Editorial reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Resist is the first full length album from Kosheen, the Bristol massive who have been around for over two years with a string of dancefloor classics, including "Slip & Slide (Suicide)" and "Hide U". The singles are featured, along with other sublime electronic breakbeat tracks and drum 'n' bass torch songs, on their debut album. Darren Decoder and Markee Substance are the production merchants, while singer/songwriter Sian Evans has raided her mother's Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell collection to come up with songs that combine traditional tunes with state-of-the art beats. In a warm, grainy voice she sings about urban relationships--being cool, being wanted, being watched, being saved. Kosheen are the drum 'n' bass act most likely to achieve that elusive crossover status. Compulsive. --Lucy O'Brien

A Storming Debut To Give Bristol Music A New Face For The Future
What an amazing debut album "Resist" is. I was a late bloomer in buying it back in 2003, but the sounds Kosheen produce throughout the album just amazed me. The album sets the tone for Drum `n' Base, Dance and Electronica and there are 16 wonderful tracks that prove that Kosheen are here to stay and putting Bristol music back on the map.

The production from Bristol Breakbeat pioneers Markee Substance and Darren Decoder is marvellous. The effects they put into each song makes the album stand out. However, what makes Resist truly stand out is female lead singer Sian Evans. Her strong, dark vocals are suited perfectly to each song and she has the opportunity to really tap in to her innermost feelings with her song writing. "Cover", "Resist", "Harder", "I Want It All", "Cruelty", "Let Go" and the beautiful last track "Gone" are moving and goes through the emotions of pain, suffering, broken relationships, loosing loved ones, protecting the things that matter and re-building the foundations. Sian's lyrics and vocals are so powerful, the listener could easily relate to what she has gone though in life, that is what I find so amazing about Kosheen.

Along with the moving, emotionally charged songs, Kosheen blend in storming dance tracks like "Hide U", "Catch", "(Slip & Slide) Suicide", "Empty Skies", "Hungry", "Face In A Crowd" and "Pride". The tempo and the beats are addictive straight away and the tunes are extremely catchy and make you want to dance all night. Hide U and Suicide really show Decoder & Substance's background in Drum 'n' Base and after listening to those tracks, you can tell why these have been so highly rated around the clubs in previous years.

It is a wonderful debut album which got me listening to more dance music and really loving Kosheen. Anyone else wanting to get into dance and drum `n' base should put Resist at the top of the "must listen to" pile!

The Whole is greater than the sum of its parts
This really is a very well constructed and evocative album. And if the singles 'Hide You', 'Catch' and 'Hungry' weren't enough to entice you there is certainly a great deal more on offer here to sink your teeth into from this very distinctive and talented group. In particular- 'Slip and Slide (Suicide)' and 'I want it all' are extremely meaningful, powerful examples of what this band can do. The haunting and resonant voice of the lead singer, the poignant lyrics and the bold musical choices could all have easily come across as depressing by themselves, but together they become something greater. This is a deep, thought provoking and particularly brave debut album, but this is music that's also very easy to float away on and the listener is given ample opportunity to gently muse on this record that's charged with inventive and mesmerising sounds throughout. There's also a refreshing amount of difference between the tracks, too often debut albums trade on a single sound or idea and carry it through into every track, but despite the phonetic similarity in the lyrics between 'Hide You' and 'Catch' there is a surprising variation here in feelings, sounds and ideas. Definitely one to add to your collection. Great album artwork too- very unusual!

Slipping and Sliding
This is a classy dance album mixed with Sian's passionate vocals it all adds up to a superb listen. I still crank up the volume and savour the 62 mins 43 secs! It's almost like Portishead on speed with a bit of pop thrown in for good measure. Stand out tracks are '(Slip and Slide) Suicide','I Want it All','Resist' and 'Pride'. If you like Indie AND dance then this is well worth purchasing.

Lyrically breathtaking, sounds amazing
Kosheen unknown still to many by name but play a song and most will go "oh yeah I know that." Their debut, is Kosheen at its finest, the follow up is dissapointing, they have left there roots and not for the better. Resist however, is fabulous. Released tracks Hide U, thumping dance track, but deep haunting lyrics, about embracing minorities, the video is great. Catch about hurting through love is brilliant in the car but listen carefully and it will help you if your feeling damaged by a lover. Harder, more mellow, and very refined about looking back on perhaps what could have been, will get you thinking. Hungry perhaps the best song, is again refined, thoughful and deep, with soft vocals from Sian. About fulfilment, utilising whatever for a greater good, amazing metaphors, and use of rhyme. Other songs on the album, I want it all, is ambiguous perhaps about a 3 way relationship, or something else, still excellent. Face in a crowd, excellent tune, always gets people listening and brilliant lyrics, Gone, Cruelty, are all amazing. The album is a real soundtrack to life, its emotional uplifting encouraging and provoking. It is a blend of genre, I recomend it to anybody, who appreciates music, songwriting, and the refined huskyness of a female voice. Listen to each track carefully, and you will stop and consider its content, and effect on you. ENJOY
