pretty commercial, but give it a listenI gotta say this album will appeal to those who enjoy listening to rap records on the radio and maybe slightly more commercial hip hop. If for example you like DMX, Busta Rhymes, Ja Rule and more recent Wu tang (such as their Gravel Pit single), then you will probably like this. However, if you prefer to listen to lyricists or innovators such as Common, Mos Def or Tribe Called Quest etc. you may find this album lacks depth but it's definitely worth looking at since you might like it anyway.
Ultimately, the album has decent beats and is good for a listen once in a while, but lacks lyrical depth and originality so you will not be playing it repeatedly over long periods. Standout tracks are Music, The Sermon, and all the Keith Murray cameos.

"I wish music would adopt me"Hip hop has changed. like it or not, it just ain't the same as it used to be is it? And one person who knows this is Erick Sermon. His legendary group EPMD once near dominated hip hop, and judgin by this solo effort, E-Dub ain't goin nowhere. Music is just basically refreshin. The entire sound of the album is just unlike any other album. From his un-mistakable beats, to his lyrical genius. The title track, "Music", which features legendary soul artist Marvin Gaye, is a hip hop masterpiece. The funky beat is complimented by Erick's smooth flow and Marvin's soulful wails. The song also boasts one of the possibly most quoted lyrics since it's release, "I wish music would adopt me". With lyrics like that, the song is not just a favourite amongst hip hop heads, but is one that music fans everywhere can relate to. "I'm Hot" follows the same formula, altho' not quite as effective second time around, the track could still put most rappers attempts to shame as it bounces along to a sample of Marvin Gaye's classic, "Sexual Healing".
One criticism i've always had of Erick Sermon is that his beats at times lack much variation, but that criticism has been rectified on the West Coast inspired "Ain't No Future...2001". If i just heared the instrumental, i coulda sworn is was the next Dre n Snoop collaboration. He also comes good on the introspective track, "The Sermon", which finds 'The Green Eyed Bandit' spit lyrics askin God for help upon his life as it uses an R Kelly sample for the hook, "sometimes i laugh, just to keep from cryin'....if it weren't for God, i'd probably be dead".
The rest of the album too is filled with definately playable material. But just in case you ever do get bored of the album, try n count all the metaphors Erick Sermon uses, i guarantee, that'll keep u occupied for a long time. Quite simply, a must have

Buy one now! This is one hip hop album you wont regret buying....none of the tracks are "fillers" and smooth production, great tunes and laid back mc'ing make for a great set of joints, featuring guest mc'ing from LL Cool J and Keith Murray and the soulful sound of Marvin Gaye. Smooth, bouncy, uptempo and with a slick summery sound, one to turn up loud in the car!
