AN ABSOLUTE CLASSICI know with the fans of Emperor this may be swearing- but I love this more than ALL there other albums! Its melodic, though very fast and EPIC!
When a person who has not listened to Emperor before, listens to this, they may be suprised... Thinking this would be 'raw' black metal, but it isnt... All there albums are different. This may be the best one to buy first, as it is the most 'accesible' for outsiders of the genre... This may take a few times to like, but soon you'll appreciate the both fast, then almost operatic bits...
Its strang... Different, but it works! and worth a BUY!

PrometheusAfter reading the other reviews on this product, on amazon and in other publications, this album was held in high stead in my mind, even though i had never heard this band's music before.
so i took the risk and bought it, and regretted every second of the slow torture i had to endure playing the whole thing through.
I lent it to friends and they all agreed that this was rubbish. i had wasted £12.99 and turned to chemical abuse to make up for this mistake.
however, i gave it another chance. this album is not background music (as other reveiwers have mentioned), this is an event... if you put this album on, lay back with your eyes closed, this masterpiece begins to make sense. the music is very complex and takes active listening for it to have its full effect. its combination of creepy ambience, epic guitars, pounding drums and black-metal rasping vocals is fully complimented by the orchestral backing which is used to great effect at key points.
as with bands such as dragonforce and dillinger escape plan, emperor seem in danger of losing artistic value in their music to overly technical composition; but they seem, in my opinion, to escape, themselves, from this musical tartarus.
if you are a fan of symphonic black-metal, this is mandatory for your collection, and even if your not, this will make you pray for an emperor reunion. i hesitate in giving it five stars, because although it is magnificent, it is not perfect, in some places the composition IS too technical and appears sloppy. please listen to this album through properly before buying, as it is not for everybody. only a select group ;)

The 2 stars are for the musicianship. This album has recieved many highly-positive reviews, and thus upon buying it I felt justified in having very high expectations. Unfortunately, as many times as I've tried to listen to it, as many times as I've tried to see the good that others have seen, each and every time I've utterly failed.
The musicianship, let's be honest, is outstanding, with constantly-interweaving and shifting riff patterns and some pretty good (but occasionally sloppy-sounding) drumming. There can be no denying the obvious ability of all three of the band members. Otherwise, I can find little else to recommend this album. The obvious technicality in the music seems to be there purely for its own sake, a problem that other bands like Dream Theatre seem to suffer from in spades. It all sounds so wanky and pretentious, to the point where I became so discouraged that I abandoned all hope of extracting any enjoyment from this album and returned it to the store.
Definitely one to listen to at a friend's place first.

So good, so different
Emperor's albums have never been less than amazing, but this just takes the band so much further than IX Equilibrium that it's properly awesome. It takes a while to really get into Prometheus - you have to actually listen to it, but when you do, it's worth it. All those old metal bands that went a bit crap - what they're missing is dramatics and that's what Emperor had.
Let's hope they reform.
