Editorial reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Torrential creativity has fast-forwarded the artistic evolution of former Whiskeytown frontman Ryam Adams from country-rock boy wonder to despondent troubadour with a 1960s fixation (his solo debut Heartbreaker), but it may also explain why listeners often need to wade through some pedestrian material just to find a few pearls of poetic excellence. Gold is no exception to that trend, a sometimes engaging middle-of-the-road roots-pop album that's both overlong (70 minutes) and at times overindulgent. There are high spots--such as the bouncy, breezy opener "New York, New York" and the plaintive ballad "When the Stars Go Blue" (which features a vocal turn reminiscent of Morrissey)--but much of the disc gets lost in forests of indistinct guitars and plodding percussion that never nudges Adams into actually rocking. Gold is the work of a notoriously prolific songwriter who hasn't yet learned to play to his strengths, one whose execution doesn't yet match his vision. --Anders Smith Lindall

Ryan rocks
This is the first Ryan album I bought and now I have all of his stuff it's still one of my favourites. He's unquestionably (to me) one of the most talented singers/songwriters there has ever been, and how other less deserving artists continuously receive more attention and sales remains beyond me, but the sensible people know who's best!

Gold is Ryan's most accessible album, in the sense that the songs are catchy (and most of them are radio-playable), but that doesn't mean they are any less intelligent than any of his other material. He sings thought-provoking, challenging lyrics which always repay careful listening.

Highlights for me include New York, New York, Answering Bell, Rescue Blues, Wild Flowers, Firecracker... let's face it, they're all fantastic tracks. If you have never heard Ryan before and want an entry point, you could do worse than start here and ease yourself into an amazing talent.

Some tracks sound like old classics
This is my favorite album in my collection, and my favorite of Ryan Adams. I have all this albums. Some of the
tracks do sound like they have always been around, like 'La Cienaga just smiled' which you could imagine having topped the charts once, when they meant something. This is certainly more commercial sounding than his other albums but I don't see that as a reason to fault it. Some purists obviously prefer his purer sounds which is fine. I prefer 'Heartbreaker' sometimes. I would disagree with the Amazon review. Pedestrian ! Hardly. Too long ? At least you get value for money. Ryan Adams still seems to be a bit of a secret and worst of all, sometimes my friends have thought I'm talking about Bryan Adams !

Quality throughout.
Ryan Adams is nothing but prolific, the amount of work he releases is astonishing yet the quality always remains, Gold is possibly his most commerical work to date and showcases a great selection of relaxing, lyrically apt songs that will eat away at you somehow becoming instilled forever. Everytime i hear any song from this album it seems to calm me, a fantastic album from a very good and still youngish artist, lets hope there's plenty more to come. 'La Cienega just smiled' is my all time favourite Adams song.

Pure Gold!
Certainly Ryan Adams' Best Album.
All 16 Tracks, different and spectacular.
Gold combines Ryan's Alt. Country Music with his more modern Rock Music. Enemy Fire a good example of this.
Wild Flowers and Sylvia Plath, both brilliant numbers in their own right and Answering Bell, considered one of his best songs!!! Every track on this deserves 5 Stars!!!
Ryan, this is too good for words

11/10 (Well Done Ryan!)
