Amazon.co.uk ReviewIt seems incredible, listening to this album, that Lambchop were ever accused of being a country band... but then, Lambchop didn't used to make records that sounded like this. The immediate predecessor of IIs A Woman/I, 2000's superb INixon/I, saw Lambchop exploring a fascination with soul music, and the journey continues on IIs a Woman/I. It is cut from the same cloth as INixon/I, but it's just a little more threadbare. Where INixon/I was a sequence of vast, shimmering electronic soundscapes, much of IIs a Woman/I is carried by little more than piano and guitar. The songs are therefore left to fend for themselves, and they live up to the confidence placed in them. The lack of instrumental competition also allows Kurt Wagner's singular voice to sound even more vulnerable and wracked than usual: "Bugs", for example, might well be the most underplayed lead vocal in the history of popular music. As a whole, IIs a Woman/I is best thought of as a companion volume to Tindersticks' ICan Our Love.../I and the Blue Nile's IPeace at Last/I, a deadpan masterpiece. --IAndrew Mueller/I

Depth to last many yearsLambchop's greatest album. My Blue Wave, perhaps greatest song by anyone this decade. The song has been misinterpreted as jokey or overtly dog loving. The blue wave is the sorrow that washes over him and which is only witnessed by his dog. Who else can write like this? Nixon is their other great album but is partly spoilt by gothic last couple of tracks. What Another Man Spills has two songs of the quality of these albums and the remaining several albums are almost like another band, Kurt's voice not at all coming into its own and the melodies much less strong. But Is A Woman is such an achievement where every band in the world can play loudly but few even attempt slow.

Their Masterpiece...Many fans place 'Nixon' as Lambchop's finest hour..and although its an album very close to my heart I would go with 'Is A Woman' as the band's greatest work thus far.

br /From the sublime tinkling piano opening of 'The Daily Growl' it still beguiles with its beautiful melodies and sublime chamber arrangements.

br /An album to treasure from one of the best Bands to come out of the States in many a'year

dull beyond wordsFor a couple of years now friends (those who read the trendy music press anyway) have been raving about this band. I bought this cd plus others in a sale - i wish i'd saved my money.brBoring, uninspired, flat, are all words that came to mind as this drivel oozed out of my speakers contaminated my aural space.brLongevity doesn't mean quality - there is none here. If you want 'alt country'(if you are sad enough to need your music labelled) with bite then try Neko Case or My Morning Jacket or even Calixico, please don't waste your time with Lambchop.

Sparkling BeautyOpening with the outstanding track, The New Cobweb Summer, Kurt Wagner's 14-piece Nashville collective have produced yet another album of charm and sparkling beauty - and a worthy sequel to 2000's awesome Nixon album. However, recording via live sessions and using Tony Crow's piano as the foundation for almost every song has lead to radically different ambience: Nixon's mix of layer upon layer of guitar, strings and brass yielded a cinematic, widescreen sound which swooped and soared - Is A Woman is more of a back-to-basics album, with only the songs/lyrics demanding your attention. For the uninitiated though, Is A Woman's eleven "dark and breezy" songs could prove to be a challenge. The pace is pedestrian - almost funereal - and the crafted melodies barely seem to exist... they simple float on the lightest of breezes. But, be patient. Give these gems a little time to embed themselves in your brain and you will surely be smitten.

Paradise/Eden/Nirvana/ElysiumThis is the most perfect piece of music ever created. It was my first exposure to Wagner. I have since bought every album. They are all immaculate, brilliant. The 1st 2 albums are similar to each other, countrified, mellow, smooth. 3rd introduces a wierd track or 2 (like Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music). 4th introduces Soul. Nixon (5th) goes full tilt at Soul and is perfect. So how about this one (6th album)? How can something be better than perfect? pThis is.
