Amazon.co.uk Review
The Defender sees Hong Kong martial arts master Jet Li playing a bodyguard from the Beijing secret police, sent to Hong Kong to protect a beautiful young witness to a mob killing, played by Christy Chung. Li turns her home into a high-security prison, complete with video cameras surveying every room, even her bedroom. Furious, Chung resists his efforts to protect her--until the threat to her life is made abundantly clear in a spectacular shopping mall shootout. As is natural under such circumstances, romance begins to bloom, much to the dismay of Chung’s lawyer boyfriend, who hired Li in the first place.

Made in the last few years before Hong Kong was returned to the rule of mainland China, The Defender makes many (possibly anxious) jokes about the differences between the austere Communist bodyguard and the lackadaisical HK police. Li’s character is so stone-faced that his usual boyish charm is repressed, and the movie emphasises gunplay over acrobatic kung fu action, but there are still kicks galore and the usual Hong Kong combination of spectacular violence and outrageous sentimentality--all captured in stylish, glossy cinematography. And how often do you get to see Venetian blinds used as an offensive weapon?--Bret Fetzer, Amazon.com

Top Action!!
A decent Jet Li film with cool gun fights & lightening fast hand to hand combat. This is kind of like the Chinese version of 'The Bodygaurd' with Jet Li playing a member of an elite corps of bodyguards called the Defenders. He's assigned to protect a pretty young witness (Christy Chung) who at first makes life pretty difficult for him by resisting his strict rules but who later realises that her life really is in danger & starts to appreciate his help alot more. A romance starts to develop between the two main characters after he saves her life in a shopping mall shoot-out which adds a nice twist to the film as the witness is already in a relationship with a rich banker. Jet Li is good in this film throughout, his boyish good looks & vulnerability when it comes to women make his character very endearing as the movie progresses & the chemistry between him & co-star Christy Chung is believable & never too OTT. I strongly recommend this film to any Jet Li fan or just any Hong Kong film fans in general.

High Kickin' Action
One of the better Jet Li movies, and one of the few that has an ending resembling anything remotely happy. Jet Li's movies tend to follow the sad asian trend of destroying the lives of main characters at the end. In this tale, entitled 'The Bodyguard from Bejing' in his home country, Jet Li plays a soldier who assigned the toughest target of all, a woman. He's to protect a rich bankers girlfriend until some mob affairs clear up, but it's clear from early on that his skills as a soldier don't make him the best babysitter.

The pair naturally fall in love, however Li disappears at the end of the movie, leaving a broken heart behind him in Hong-Kong. The fight scenes sell this movie though, but theres actually a story behind it that's above passable at any rate.

Top quality film!
This film was definitely a pleasant surprise. Jet Li's Defender is not simply 90 minutes of Kung Fu action but instead it's a gripping, quality suspense thriller. If you thought all Jet Li could ever do was fight, then this film will certainly raise your expectations in him as an actor. The whole story is basically about Jet Li working as a bodyguard hired to protect a young woman whose life is in danger and the relationship that develops. Jet Li is fantastic - he delivers a very moody and believable performance throughout the whole film. As always the English dubbing ruins it a little - it's a little cheesy too at times but you'll not mind. If you're a Jet Li fan then this film is a must but be aware that most action scenes are filled with pistols rather than fists of fury...(apart from an amazing fight scene at the end of film). Think of it more like a Die Hard type of film - with Jet Li. Great Stuff.
