The Great Race
A classic comedy film - Jack Lemmon's villian kept me laughing from beginning to end. The DVD also played on my Phillips DVD, despite worries about being the american format

Not so great, but not so bad either
Dedicated to Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy though actually closer in tone to silent Keystone comedies, Blake Edwards' epic comedy often mistakes expense for wit and is surprisingly short on real laughs but still manages to throw in enough entertainment value in its rather padded out running time to make an acceptable Sunday afternoon matinee. Unfortunately it's rather overplayed by a cast who should know better: no surprise that Tony Curtis sends up his old matinee idol with reckless abandon as the Great Leslie, but it's disappointing to see Jack Lemmon go quite so over the top to quite so little effect as the dastardly villain of the piece Professor Fate. As the names show, subtlety isn't on the menu - but then when the film boasts the world's largest custard pie fight, that's not exactly surprising. Yet for all the money thrown at the screen there's still the feeling that played a little bit straighter and with perhaps a little less money and a bit more thought, this could have been the much funnier film it wants to be. br /

The Greatest Race
This is a marvellous film and it looks fantastic on DVD. I managed to get a region 2 copy from a german on E bay. It had an English soundtrack on it and once you figure out what english soundtrack means in german, your in business. I was so pleased to get it as I invariably missed it when it was shown on TV. Its as funny now as it was the first time I saw it. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon are brilliant together at least as good as they were in Some Like It Hot. The Prisoner Of Zenda spoof with Lemon as the drunken prince is so funny. A brilliant comedy,

A Chase of Classic Proportions
I've always liked this film and thought it a great pity there had been no Region 2 release on DVD.brThis cracking tale of dastardly deeds and deceit is a marvellous race to reach the next gag. And there is never long to wait!!brThrough a plethora of cultures and engaging social backgrounds, the tale never seems to peak, until the fantastic pie fight. brA well re-mastered film, although the soundtrack did seem to fade in places.brHowever, top marks.

The Great REGION 1 ???
What needs to be said about this film? It is a classic. Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk make superb comic villians and must have given rise to the idea of Dastardly and Muttley. The custard pie fight is the biggest you're ever likely to see. In all, an excellent fun filled family film that can be watched time and again. Now the interesting stuff .....brI bought a Region 1 DVD copy from bestpricecds via Amazon. Yes it is NTSC but it plays quite happily on both my Region-Free DVD player and my Region 2 player. Ummmm! Maybe this is a Region 0 DVD as other Region 1 DVDs will not play on my Region 2 player!
