Amazon.co.uk ReviewA fascinating document of a fast-disappearing way of life, IThe Year of the Working Sheepdog/I is an examination of a living, working farm. Followed by cameras over the course of 12 months, shepherd David Kennard and narrator Christopher Timothy take the viewer through the seasons on Kennard's North Devon farm, accompanied at all times by his faithful set of Border Collie sheepdogs. With the Atlantic coastline forming a spectacular backdrop, the shepherd and his dogs demonstrate the incredible relationship between man and animal, a relationship rarely matched for sheer instinct and communication. p With its low budget production and Timothy's enthusiastic narration, IThe Year of the Working Sheepdog/I is ever so slightly reminiscent of an old-style education film, but nonetheless paints a charming picture of a longstanding way of life. There is little evidence of the increasing mechanisation of the industry and the crises that would affect many farms, Kennard's included, but this is certainly recommended to those with an interest in the countryside and its unique ways. --IPhil Udell/I

Risk pays off for hard working farmerThe farmer in this video had the (rather desperate) idea of making a video of a year in the life, focussing on his sheep dogs. Short of money (hill farming in the UK is an impoverished business), he obtained some grants, put himself at considerable financial risk and produced this - well - surprisingly watchable video. At times fascinating and spectacular, it shows the astounding level of intelligence and ability of trained border collies in managing sheep at phemonenal distances. The affinity with the farmer has to be seen to be believed.pWhilst at times idealistic, this serves as a good pictorial record of a life in danger of being eradicated by changing society and gives a brief view into the hardships of sheep farming.pSeeing that this was only intended to sell around 3000 copies per year this is a stunning output and shows the real life of "One man and his dog".
