A worthy addition to the Open Championship video collection
Written by Phil Yates and narrated by Jack McKenzie, the 55-minute official film of the 2002 Open, while essentially a summation of the golf, is also a snapshot of open championship week, with vignettes on golfing photography, the Swedish players, and the wildlife to be found in the vicinity. The influence nature has, particularly as regards the weather, is a theme of the video, and the Saturday of the open was a prime example of what the elements can do, as wind and rain produced conditions as severe as many could remember. To keep us abreast of atmospheric conditions, the on-site weather forecaster is introduced, and the highlights of each round are preceded by his forecast for the day. Comments from some of the players also punctuate the film, and while not all enhance the video, there are some instructive insights from the eventual champion, Ernie Els, concerning the latter stages of the final round. About 25 minutes are devoted to the final day, and such were the toings and froings and the general congestion on the leader board, it is difficult to keep track of everyone. Hole-by-hole scores of the leading protagonists printed inside the cover of the video would have been a useful addition.
