Amazon.co.uk Review
Two years after Quality Control proved that B-boy-oriented retro-rap doesn't have to be corny, Power in Numbers sees Jurassic 5 gearing up for the revolution. While fans of Quality Control's bright sound will still find much to enjoy here, J5's sophomore offering does a good job at extending their sound. Opening with "Freedom", a quiet yet focused call to action, Power in Numbers presents a slightly darker vision of hip-hop nirvana than the group offered first time around. In keeping with the album's title, J5 have also expanded its extended crew--Percy P (of the early-90s underground group, Double XX Posse) and Big Daddy Kane help wreck the G Rap-esque "A Day at the Races", and the always game alterna-diva, Nelly Furtado, lends a surprisingly effective pop edge to the bouncy "Thin Line". On the production end of things, Juju of the Beatnuts adds his special blend of Colombian madness to the jazzy "If You Only Knew" and the considerably bleaker "One of Them." --Rebecca Levine

Description

Awesome LP
Dug this album out this morning for the first time in a while. Sick beats meet a bunch of MCs at the absolute top of their game.

This rates as my favourite straight hiphop album, and is J5's best work to date.

Breathtaking
I try to keep an open mind when I listen all types of music, but for the most part (regardless of genre) mainstream music is complete garbage. Once in awhile though, you find true ARTISTS, people who take music to a new level through innovation, technique, and expression. Rock music has Tool, industrial has Nine Inch Nails, country had Johnny Cash, and hip hop has these guys. First and foremost, Jurassic 5 are pioneers. I first heard of J5 through the video "The Influence" and was immediately hooked. The complexity of their samples from Cut Chemist and DJ Nu Mark mixed with the beautiful rhyme melodies of the MCs is simply a breathtaking combination. The guys keep this wondrous formula with Power in Numbers, but whereas Quality Control was a more "happy" album, Power takes a little more serious side (due to maturity? who knows, who cares, it still sounds great :) ). Dont get me wrong, theyre still upbeat reminiscient of the days of De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest, but maybe more with a "dark" overtone. And thats what I love about this group. I honestly dont wanna hear another Quality Control album....been there, done that. I love a group whos able to explore new directions and is willing to take chances without any consideration if this album is gonna make it on the MTV airplay or how much commercial recognition they will achieve. The highlight for me was High Fidelity, its just mesmorizing hearing that flute play while the guys chant over the beats in a barbershop quartet fashion (the sampling in the middle of the song is a work of art also). Other notable tracks include Whats Golden, A Day at the Races, and Freedom. I dont care what you "normally" listen to, this album is a must have for any music lover in general.

Simply stunning
I am a fan of a wide scale of music, and probably have interests or favourites in any genre of music. I bought this album on the pretext that it was similar to Will Smith in it's smooth and classic style, and I had heard an excerpt of 'A Day At The Races' - but what I discovered that this album was so muchmore. It's now one of my favourite albums of all time, and with good reason.

In this day and age, the whole 'homie rapper' thing is whereing a thin, with egotistical rappers bouncing around and sprining up everywhere. But this album is not, I repeat, is not a rap album. The artists themselves do not describe themselves as rapper. They are rhymers. It's more of a chilled out, calmed down rapper with a positive outlook on life. And that's probably the best way to decribe this album; cool and positive. The guys bounce of each other brilliantly, with a genuine love for what they do. It sounds amazing. Their licks are smooth and smart, full of wit, irony, whatever lititary technique you care to mention. Their contrasting voics add much to the songs, and the group sections are a highlight. But then, where would all these brilliant rhymes be without a good and solid backbeat? Well, this is covered, thanks to DJ Nu-Mark and Cut Chemist, two excellent MCs with a passion and uniqueness to their tracks. There are none of the plain, gangsta rap beats here, but melodic, movin' and interesting beats that match the talent of the rhymers.

In short, a legendary album; truly astounding in every sense of the world. Buy it; you won't regret it - that's a promise.

Yeah
First things first, i'm a metal head. This album is among my collection of opeth and in flames. This album is excellent, perfect for a nice hot summer day chilling with friends. This is what all hip hop should be like, soulful, musical and most importantly fun. The bassline on 'Whats Golden' is amazing. There isnt a weak song on the album but some of the highlights include: Freedom, High Fidelity, Whats Golden, Thin Line, I Am Somebody and A Day At The Races.
