ALL HAIL GOAPELE
Now I came across the name Goapele on a thing about urban artists and thought, hey, I'll give this CD a try. Ordering it from Amazon was certainly a wise thing to do!brGoapele (qua-peh-lay) Mohlabane is a South African artist who resides in the USA, and her debut album 'Even Closer' belongs to the 'neo-soul' genre of which artists such as D'Angelo and Meshell Ndegeocello lie.brA much less intense affair than the works of artists such as Ndegeocello, Goapele almost falls into r'n'b, but is too quirky for that. Single 'Closer' is a breezy affair that just goes along nicely but with sumptuous style, like a ballad offering from any of Mya's albums.br'Ease Your Mind' and 'The Daze' are the two songs that slide into mainstream hip-hop but again Goapele appears as not the kind of woman who jumps on a bandwagon. 'Things Don't Exist' is a beautiful song which showcases Goapele's talents to maximum effect.brMake no mistake that Goapele has an impressive voice. She isn't one of those artists who tries to put across messages in their music without actually having the talent to do it effectively.br'Red, White Blues' is a gloriously moody song streaked and dyed with rock influences like the White Stripes.brGoapele's debut is by no means the best CD out there at the moment, but she is a real gem of a talent who has yet to be discovered. Those of who into music by the likes of Mya will lap this up, and rock lovers will find something tasty here as well. An unknown artist? Hopefully not for much longer.
