Amazon.co.uk Review
This was only Ken Loach's second cinema feature but it still ranks as one of his finest and most moving films. Billy, a disaffected young lad living on a soulless Barnsley estate, finds a fledgling kestrel and, for the first time in his life, feels his imagination gripped. With infinite patience--and a book on falconry nicked from a local bookstore--he starts to train the bird. p There's no boy-and-his-pet sentimentality here: the relationship between Kes the bird and the puny, taciturn Billy is the kinship, full of wary respect, between two wild creatures, and when Kes for the first time flies free and returns to Billy's wrist, the sense of exhilaration is overwhelming. pAlthough Loach never rams his message home, it's clear that Billy stands for a whole generation of youngsters whose potential, barring some such chance event, will never be even fractionally realised. Chris Menges' photography brings out all the austere beauty of the Yorkshire locations, and Loach draws believable performances from his largely non-professional cast--especially the 14-year-old David Bradley, stunningly convincing as Billy. And anyone who has ever suffered under a bullying, self-satisfied sports teacher will squirm with recognition at the brilliant cameo from the late Brian Glover. --IPhilip Kemp/I

Memories
Was so good to watch this film again after so many years after its release, very funny but at the same time moving

Reality TV - but in a good way
Barry Hines' brilliant novel of unconditional love, poverty and betrayal, makes a superb film; director Ken Loach demonstrates his trademark earthy, no punches pulled style, and the cast and scenery make you feel like this is reality rather than fiction. Of course, the standout performance here belongs to the inimitable Brian Glover; as Yorkshire as batter pudding he grunts and growls his way through the memorable football match scene and quite simply steals the show. Heartwarming and touching, but ultimately tragic; Kes is arguably the best British film ever made - it's certainly the best film ever set in Barnsley!

Kes DVD
One of my favorite British films of all time. The movie is based upon Barry Hines, classic 1968 novel `A Kestrel for a Knave'.Directed by Ken Loach with fantastic performances particularly by David Bradley and Brian Glover. Kes follows the boyhood experiences of Billy, whose expectations lead no further than following his brother inti the pits. That all changes when he finds Kes, a young Kestrel, whom he trains. A marvellous and moving film. Kes is an authentic story of an attempt to escape the drudgery of the industrial north and an astute analysis of society at large during that time.

Kes soars sky high
An absolutely brilliant film. True northern down to earth family life. A thoroughly entertaining and moving film about a young boy and his kestrel. Schooldays, quarrels with his older brother and paper delivery rounds are all part of young Billy's everyday life. Kes is his means of escaping all that he dislikes. Funny and sad also. A wonderful performance by the actor playing young Billy.

Amazing!
I first saw this beautiful and legendary film today and all I can say is, what a gem it really is! br /The storyline is wonderful, the acting is truely unbeatable and "Kes" will make you both laugh and cry. br /Lynne Perrie who later went on to play Ivy Tilsley in Coronation Street, deserves recognition as a fantastic actress, I loved her in "Corrie", "Queenie's Castle", "Follyfoot", "Leeds United" and of course, her infamous appearances on "The Word" and "Shooting Stars". But perhaps her best work is "Kes" where she plays the mouthy Mrs. Casper. br /The other actors are also brilliant and the storyline is strong. br /Above all, this film is a truely remarkable piece of work that I can fully recommened you see.
