Music to drift along withEvery day I set aside some chill out time ( in effect I put up a do not disturb sign up) in this time I listen to one cd with headphones on and drift along with the music weather it's forty minuets or eighty minuets long.
br /This cd fits that bill perfectly if you look at my music reviews you will see that they relate to music not songs . I don't know much about tangerine dream but having exhausted mike oldfield's collection I started to look for something similar and finally bought this having listened to some extended samples from a download sight ( I always prefer the original cd)
br /I will certainly look for more from tangerine dream in the future yes this was first released in 1986 but it's new to me . If you're a mike oldfield fan this group are worth checking out.
br /The music is a mixture of electrical and guitar, relaxing and good to listen to not in car music though parts of it will be drowned out by traffic noise. I tend to buy music that in my view will stand the test of time and this will be in that category . If you are a T.D.fan and reading this I'm open to suggested T.G. albums based on the quality of this album.

Too good to ignoreTangerine Dream's 1986 album "Underwater Sunlight" is the second of their major themed studio albums, building on the success of their previous release, "Le Parc". It also marks Paul Haslinger's debut with the band, following the departure of Johannes Schmoelling some six months earlier.

br /Inspired perhaps by Edgar Froese's love for scuba diving, this album evokes various aspects of the underwater world but without resorting to any hackneyed techniques or sonic images which are commonplace on those 'natural ambient recordings' to be found all over the place nowadays. Don't worry that this disc is awash with 'soothing and relaxing synthesiser sounds (TM)' played over taped whale and dolphin sounds and the splashing of the sea, though! Rather, what you'll find here are truly musical portraits-albeit of synthesiser origin-and all of the highest possible order.

br /The major work on the disc is the two-part 'Song of the Whale'-a classic Tangerine Dream composition. For almost 20 minutes, mellifluous guitar and soft synthesiser melodies build music which dips and soars majestically, at times driven along by sequencer-powered synthesiser rhythms and no-nonsense electronic percussion lines, at other times drifting calmly in currents of its own making. Paul Hasslinger stamps his mark on this album very early on with his rhythm guitar work permeating both parts of 'Song of the Whale' and with a sparkling grand piano solo, introducing part II. Hasslinger's rhythm guitar is in evidence, too, in the next track, 'Dolphin Dance', which is an altogether more playful piece, featuring more classic TD alternating synthesiser and guitar riffs over pulsing percussion and jangling guitar. 'Ride on the Ray' is a more stately affair, its melodies gliding effortlessly over a glittering array of percussion elements, while 'Scuba scuba' uses a serious of flowing synthesiser voices to portray the scuba diver's distorted aural perspective of the world. Finally, the closing 'Underwater twilight' evokes the somewhat unnerving serenity of the half-light found in deeper waters. Starting with a subdued and rather sedate synthesiser chorus, out of whose dulcet tones an electronic tom and percussion pulse emerges, with a shower of keyboard runs slowly rising like a flow of bubbles to the surface, this track draws the album to a powerful but gentle and satisfying conclusion.

br /My only complaint of this album is that, like many of its day, its 40-minute duration is somewhat scant by modern CD standards. Incidentally, the 5-CD "Dream Roots Collection" includes about half of this album, scattered over its 3 central CDs. But heck, you need all of it! An absolute delight throughout, this music is really just too good to ignore and if you're at all tempted, you shouldn't hold back!

Some do,some don'tAs with many Tangerine Dream fans my age my first taste of 'Krautrock' was via 'Phaedra', in 1974, at the tender age of 16. Why did I like it? Because, for forty minutes or so, it took me on a journey to another place, a journey where my imagination was the vehicle to wherever I wanted to go. Next stop 'Zeit' but nothing happened, I wasn't going anywhere, it wasn't working. I decided many years ago that I couldn't /wouldn't try to explain why TD music was good, bad or indifferent using 'Mellotrosyntheticsequence speak' because I didn't see the point. It either lifts me out of my favourite arm chair or it doesn't and that's all that matters to me. Underwater Sunlight doesn't work for me and the only place it takes me to is a National Trust gift shop where I hear a voice inviting me to " Select disc 1 for Sounds of the Rainforest. Disc 2 for South American Panpipes...............Disc 50 for Singing Dolphins". I've tried about 20 TD albums to date and so far the only ones that work for me are all pre 1978, namely Alpha Centauri, Atem, Phaedra, Rubycon, and Ricochet. I've made yet another mistake with Underwater Sunlight but I'll keep trying, only another 30 or so to go, and I will try them all eventually. What do you want from your TD albums? Underwater Sunlight might be the one to take you for a brief encounter outside the real world. If it does you'll soon get value for money for you £4.50 +pp. Next stop for me, Statosfear!!

A Later Classic...br /This is the one Tangerine Dream CD that my wife plays... "Song Of The Whale Pt2 - To Dusk" was even used as a backdrop to part of our wedding video and never fails to bring a tear to my eye.....
br /
br /There is real romantic beauty here in these tracks. Paul Haslinger brought something fresh to Tangerine Dream, a heart and soul in the compositions and playing, and a maturity to the style.

br /I really love this album and hope that this brief review encourages you to purchase this CD.
