A truly magnificent voice
Sara Mingardo has one of those rare true alto voices and an absolutely beautiful one at that. No undue pressure or hollowness in the lower regions and no unnecessary darkness in the top notes, with plenty of flexibility and light. She has been a real discovery for me, and this CD is no disappointment. It also offers some lesser known pieces of music which are well worth exploring. Mingardo's presentation of Vivaldi's Stabat Mater and Cantata 'Cessate, omai Cessate' on this CD show her voice in all its warmth and flexibility. I was surprised to find the Pergolesi 'Stabat Mater' sections on this title somewhat disappointing. Somehow doesn't quite impress as much as the rest. Scarlatti's 'Stabat Mater' is much more satisfying. The aria 'Domine Deus' from Vivalidi's Gloria is a staggering demonstration of legato singing at its best. And the two 'Magnificat' sections are equally beautiful. The arias from Handel's Disenganno, sung with passion but without over-dramatisation, also demonstrate why this repertoire suits Mingardo's voice so perfectly. In fact, I would recommend buying the entire 'Il trionfo del tempo e del disenganno' recording by Rinaldo Alessandrini with the Concerto Italiano (Opus 111). It is a beauty! brDespite my reservations about the Pergolesi, which might be a matter of taste, this CD is a must for anyone who loves beautfiful singing and voices. And while we're at it, I would also suggest looking out for another Sara Mingardo CD: Arie, Madrigale Cantate (also on opus 111). An even more worthwhile purchase!
