An album of two distinct halves, The Best of Whitesnake inevitably but annoyingly jumbles up honest, workmanlike tracks from the pre-1984 blues-rock outfit with transatlantic poodle-rock from a late-80s band that had the same name and same frontman but little in common musically with their previous incarnation. The only track from their first proper studio album Trouble is the subsequent live standard "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" and there's also just one cut from 1978's Lovehunter ("Long Way from Home"). Other highs include "Fool for Your Loving" (Ready an' Willing, 1980) and the sassy boogie of "Would I Lie to You" (Come an' Get It)--exactly what Whitesnake did best. Poodle-power-chord tracks to avoid include "Is This Love" from 1987 and "Now You're Gone" from 1989's even more dire Slip of the Tongue. Significantly, by the time of "Too Many Tears" from 1997's Restless Heart, Coverdale is nostalgically harking back to the band's blues roots: "All I'm asking is where did I go wrong?" he sings. a great selection of songs by a great band, buy this along with the 1994 greatest hits and the 2004 early years compilation then you would truly have the very best of whitesnake!

Great selection of songs!
In my opinion there are soooooooooooooo many good whitesnake songs and this album is a good example!

Its definatly a good starter album for the new fans.

Snake Rattle An' Roll
The first thing I would advise you to do is...Ignore the above Amazon review..anyone would think they didn't want you to order the album, that guy needs to be fired..NOW...Anyway, onto the album, I agree that Whitesnake were a band of 2 styles, the blues/rock of the 1st few albums, and the American sounding pomp rock of later years..but this Cd has the very best of both styles, and i think it's a worthy addition to the collection of anyone who calls their self a fan of Whitesnake..buy it.

I've liked Whitesnake since I was young, I had bought one of their albums during the 80s, they were O.K.; but let's face it, they have not produced many good songs. Here is a review of the songs (some has no comments, that means that these songs are below average to my personal opinion or I just never heard them before and I'm not impressed):
1. Fool for you loving: Great song at the time, I got bored of it though
2. Don't Break my Heart: no comment
3. Love aint no stranger: no comment
4. Is this Love: One of their best songs and one of the best Rock ballads of all times.
5. Now you're gone: no comment
6. Give me all you love: same as song number 1
7. Ready An Willing: no comment
8. Guilty of Love: no comment
9. Would I lie to you: no comment
10. Long way from home: no comment
11. The Deeper the Love: one of their good songs, a surviving tune.
12. Aint no love: no comment
13. Too many tears: no comments
14. Give me more time: no comment
15. Standing the Shadow: no comment
16. Here I go Again: Their best song Ever. A song that every one should hear.
17. Still of the Night: I think this is their most resent work in their effort for a come back. not impressive.

If any one like Whitesnake, but is not a huge fan, then he's better of buying the only two songs worth buying over the net instead of buying the whole album.

Could this the best of Whitesnake?
This album may be called "The best of Whitesnake", yet…

Too many songs on this album are from the "American" years and not enough from the "English" years, the real Halcyon days of Whitesnake.

Most of this album is indeed, commercially successful, classic, US hard rock: some great songs, a lot of L.A. mid-eighties style (no need to comment further I suppose… even if the "1987 Whitesnake album rocked in a very Hollywood kind of way!!!)

It is a pity that only a few tracks from the seventies and the very beginning of the eighties are here to demonstrate how brilliant David Coverdale and his dream team (the best line-up according to me included Ian Paice, Jon Lord, Micky Moody, Bernie Mardsen , Neil Murray) were: "Ready 'n' Willing", "Long Way from Home", and the bluesy live version of "Ain't no love in the heart of the city"…

By the way, may I suggest the double live album "Live in the heart of the city", as it is a real eternal classic and provides the true best of Whitesnake?

(for less than 8 pounds as well!!!!!)
