Editorial reviews
Amazon.co.uk ReviewAC/DC's fourth album is the lull after the triumph of
Let There Be Rock and before the mighty peaks of
If You Want Blood You've Got It and
Highway To Hell.
Powerage contains all the familiar AC/DC trademarks: Bon Scott's rather less than Yeatsian lyrical vision ("Rock & Roll Damnation", "Up To My Neck In You"), Angus Young's brilliantly minimal guitar playing, a rhythm section as relentless and efficient as an infantry regiment, and the astute production of former Easybeats Harry Vanda and George Young. However, it lacks a truly transcendent moment, a "Whole lotta Rosie" or a "TNT". Of course, even an average AC/DC album is still an eloquent lesson in the fundamentals of rock & roll, and by that token
Powerage is still capable of blowing most opposition out of the water. Bon Scott's exultant declaration of working-class solidarity, "Riff raff", is worth six Bon Jovi albums on its own.

Wow! Why is this album so unknown to the public? No seriously why? This album is amazing. This one of AC/DCs best albums. This is more bluesy rock n roll and the blues is very evident in this album. Every song on this album gets better. When you listen to each song you think can this get any better and it does. Best songs are Downpayment Blues, Riff Raff, Rock N Roll Damnation & What's Next The Moon?.
This is a must for every AC/DC fan this should be one of AC/DCs most popular albums ever but sadly it isn't it's certainly one of their best. This is a great start to AC/DC it's one of their. Why it's not more known is beyond me but we'll have to deal with it. Buy this Rock classic if you're a rock n roll fan. LET THERE BE ROCK!!!!!!!!!

Andrew Mueller is talking out of his a***An average AC/DC album ? The man has no idea what he's talking about.
Powerage, for all the reasons pointed out in other comments here, is not only AC/DC's finest effort but one of the mightiest rock albums ever committed to vinyl/CD etc.
I have two vinyl copies because I wore the first one out ! Can't say that about Highway to Hell.
Fantastic dirty guitar sounds & no fillers. No wonder the punks had a soft spot for these boys ....

The Best Album EverPowerage is a great example for any band or musician to follow. There's a fantastic level of musicianship on it and no fuss made over it whatsoever. There's humour and pathos and introspection and there's still plenty of room for songs about drinking and shagging. The band is as tight as a gnat's a*se - all without click tracks and digital editing - and some of the tracks are recorded almost completely live with only the vocals laid on afterwards, Gone Shootin' being my favourite example. The interplay between the rhythm section and the guitars is mesmerising and sometimes downright funky (see Gimme A Bullet). The album features my favourite riff of all time: Riff Raff borrows heavily from Zep's Rock And Roll but retains a freshness that ensures it never sounds like a rip-off.
This was an album made specifically to crack the American market. To that end it's a bit more accessible than Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (which didn't get an American release till after Bon Scott's death) and Let There Be Rock. It sits between that album and Highway to Hell perfectly - the ideal bridge between maniacal dirty rock and a more polished product. There are sops for commercial US radio, notably the shakers in Rock'N'Roll Damnation and the distinct, more-boogie-than-heavy-rock feel to much of the record, but none of this dilutes the sound of the band - if anything, it enhances it.
Ultimately of course it failed to have the effect they'd hoped Statesside, the production team was ditched and Mutt Lange was brought in to make Highway To Hell, which finally did the business for them in the US. And a very fine record it is, too. But for my money Powerage is the apex. Every home should have one and every rock band should aspire to its ideal. It's flawless.

AwesomeHave been listening to ACDC stuff since i was at High School and am now pushing 50.
I've played all their albums goodness knows how may times over the years and in my opinion this is their Best closely followed by "If you want Blood"
I agree with an earlier review - the ACDC albums everyone must have:
Powerage, If you want Blood, Back in Black and Highway to Hell. If these are the only albums you ever listen to in your life - you'll die a happy man

THE ORIGINAL AC/DC SOUND - RAW, HARD AND UNFORGETTABLEPowerage captures AC/DC at their most poignant best - simple, raw hard rock with no frills. It's why the album is often touted as their best ever by loyal fans. I certainly will play this over and above anything else because it is simply a great great album.
The guitar sound isn't over produced, it's pounding through most of the classics like Riff Raff, Sin City and Down payment blues, but then eases off on the Gimme a Bullet to produce a mid tempo bluesy rock track that is one of th eri finest moments. This album is a snapshot in time as they never reproduced the same sound again in proceeding albums. With the track listing relatively short and missing the superb Cold Hearted man, this is an album to savour and also reflect on the many more tracks we would have liked in this raw Ac/Dc vein.
