Amazon.co.uk ReviewIn IThe Good Girl/I Jennifer Aniston gets a make-under that would make her IFriends/I character weep, but she finally proves her acting mettle away from the ditzy-but-glamorous Rachel type. A low-key drama from the writer and director duo behind IChuck and Buck/I, IThe Good Girl/I places Aniston's bored shop-girl Justine at the centre of a soul-destroying life in a sleepy Texan town. Like a modern Madame Bovary, Justine's life is stuck in a rut--her marriage is dull and her job at the Retail Rodeo even duller--when a new colleague Holden (Jake Gyllenhaal) offers her an escape. A tortured soul who's obsessed with IThe Catcher in the Rye/I and thinks nobody understands him, Holden is a typical, angst-ridden young man. But to Justine he's intriguing and romantic and their shared sense of dejection soon leads to an affair and a short-lived liberation from their daily lives. p Aniston could never pass as dowdy but she does a very convincing turn as the crestfallen Justine, using subtlety and dry humour rather than melodrama to convey her quiet desperation. John C Reilly as her permanently stoned husband and Tim Blake Nelson as his creepy chum are both superb alongside her. Even the smaller roles are furnished with some memorable moments: Justine's colleague makes outrageous tannoy announcements to zombie-like customers at the Retail Rodeo. Funny, strange and touching by turns IThe Good Girl/I, has its awkward moments but as a quirky slice of life it gets most things right. p BOn the DVD:/B IThe Good Girl/I offers a feature-length commentary from director Miguel Arteta and writer Mike White that takes a while to get going but does provide some insight and humour. Aniston adds a scene-specific commentary that sadly does little to enhance the viewing of the film; short comments, some with massive pauses, offer little in the way of insight into her breakout performance. Deleted scenes with optional commentary and an alternate ending add a little more bulk where the gag reel (out-takes of the cast laughing) fails. It's not the package the film deserves. --ILaura Bushell/I

Not Seriously Funny but Seriously Laughable!I thought this film was a complete joke rather than a comedy. I have three main points that really frustrated me throughout having to sit through this awful piece of middle of the road Hollywood - so called - comedy.
br /
br /First and foremost, why the hell did Gwen die of being sick and having 'a tummy ache' - quote from film. Her death was completely random, unnecessary, showed little planning and even worse timing because it neither fitted with the story (the audience barely knew the girl - totally undeveloped)and produces no real consequence or message. This pointless character's death was made into the one really comedic point in the film when the Store Manager announces 'Glen (instead of Gwen) is dead' - and this is meant to be a comedy film!?
br /
br /Secondly, the relationship between Holden and Justine is another undeveloped aspect of the film- they end up having sex in the first 20 minutes of the film and have no connection bare a boring shop job. There is little chemistry between the two and the idea that Holden is supposed to be the guy of justines dreams is completley ridculous as he is mentally unstable and emotionaily stunted. He lacks any charm or maturity, childishly expecting Justine to leave her boring life for him with the money hes going to steal from his parents when he kills them. All he seems to do is cry in the car that isn't even his and sit with his boring parents watching television - WHAT A LIFE!! The passion betwen them was non existnce, and i couldnt help but cringe throughiut the lack lustre attempts to portray an ounce of chemistry. Even the sex scene was the most boring and unpassionate piece of acting ever.
br /
br /The character of Bubba just added to the grotesque nature of the characters depicted. Bubba was presented as a junkie low life that somehow got Justine to sleep with him while his vile dog sat in the corner, occasionally jumping up to join in! Barbaric!! What did amuse me was the fact that during the sex scene Jennifer Aniston wears her top and looks like she's going to fall asleep - so bad is Bubba at sex.
br /
br /The sub plot of gwen randomly dieing was topped by the useless character of Justine's husband who was fundementally thick. Anistons attempt at a stong southern accent was another laughable aspect and highlighted how this film was ultimatley an awful attempt at a comedy attempting to portray a romance - this film severly FAILED. The Good Girl failed on every level and certainly was not Seriously Funny as described on the DBD case - which is now in the bin!

Good MovieThe Good Girl is a relatively good movie, with its dark comedy and reality affair. However I believe the check out girl played by Zooey Deschanel stole the show.

Umm, Not quite what I was expecting...First of all I'm a huge fan of Jennifer Aniston and personally thought she was great in this movie. It was a bit weird trying to adjust to her not being Rachel Green, but she's a great actress and it didn't take long.
br /
br /The film itself, despite being in the Comedy section and having 'Seriously Funny' on the DVD cover contains suprising few laughs. It it quite a serious film and it's certainly not the sort of comedy i was expecting, but when it's funny, it's funny! Look out in particular for Cheryl, Justines co-worker who comes out with some great lines. Also Gwen, the always happy, never angry other co-worker of Justines. Even though she's only in it for 30 minutes she's a great character and it's truly upsetting what becomes of her.

br /Overall not a bad film and I'd watch it again.

Good story told wellThe soft white underbelly of McJob any town is an unusual choice for the nominally over fluffed and over excited Aniston, so good for her for choosing it and she does a good job as the central character in the tale of contemporary small town America. . Her performance stands out against average supporting cast performances or perhaps it is because the story is really just about her character and there is not much room for anyone else. Very enjoyable and a little offbeat.

A comedy with real depthThis film suprised me like it did so many other people. Jennifer Aniston in her role as Justine is stunning and, after the first 15 minutes I firmly forgot about Rachel.
br /
br /I love the entire cast here. All of them deliver a shining performance in their roles and all support the leads very well. As always Jake Gyllenhaal and John C. Reilly provide typically excellent performances as the disturbed lover and 'faithful hound' husband.
br /
br /It was advertised as 'seriously funny' which I think is a mistake, as that does tend to give the impression of one of those brainless hollywood rom-coms, as this films takes a deeper look at loneliness, the destruction of dreams and the realisation of your own discontent.
br /
br /I would genuinely recommend this film to anyone who isn't wanting a ridiculous, brainless comedy.
