Amazon.co.uk ReviewThis 1953 musical is very much a vehicle for Doris Day, in the title role, as a wild cowgal who can out-shoot and out-sing any boy on the range. When an actress arrives in Deadwood and uses her feminine charms on Jane's secret love, Wild Bill Hickock (Howard Keel), Jane tries to mend her tomboy ways. Not exactly up to the feminist code of honour, this is still energetic and Day is very perky. Of course, one could almost detect a homosexual undercurrent with the cross-dressing Jane, but this was Hollywood in the 1950s, so we best not.
Calamity Jane won an Oscar for Best Song--"Secret Love", by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster.

My 12 year old loved itI saw this years ago and forgot how brilliant it is in a feel good kind of way. As a former tom boy I can't help but relate to 'Clam' and was pleasently surprised that my daughter and her friend watched it all the way through and she asked to watch it again the next day. Only downside is that I can't stop singing the tunes in my head and sometimes outload much to my family's embarressment.

A MUST!!!!One of my favourite films EVER, if not my favourite. It compares the care-free western country life with the busy bustle of Chicago. The songs are great, the plot genius and the script hilarious. Add this to Doris Day and a touch of romance, it makes a film to watch again and again(I have watched it four times but could still watch it again and again!) A MUST!!!!!!!

If you dont like this - you need to be on the next stage coach out of town !?It is so hard to believe this film was made in 1953 !? It has a timeless quality and no matter how many times you watch it (thanks to fresh as a daisy Doris) this film never feels old.
The colour, life and sheer dynamism of Doris in the role takes your breath away - she IS Calamity Jane. Doris was born to play this title role. She is sassy, self-assured, cocky and confident. It almost seems a shame that she needs a man to make her 'complete', but the evolution of her character from Tom Boy to Beautiful Woman is legendary - who could fail to be stunned at the sight of Doris in that yellow dress, picking daffodils, singing 'My Secret Love' ?
Everything seems to take 2nd place to Doris in this film - she shines so brightly - but the music is catchy, melodic and fun ( I love that 'I got two wonderful arms, I got two wonderful lips...' drag act !?) and the story moves along nicely, with a heart-warmingly old-fashioned happy ending that will keep Mum, Gran AND the kids content for an afternoon of pure indulgence.
A classic. Must-have for any DVD Musical collection.

Doris hits a high noteThis movie can lay claim to be Doris Day's greatest work. And for someone with a career that lasted decades, and saw her be the number one movie, tv and recording star during that time, that is saying something.
True, there are some weak points - Howard Keel is under-used, and some of the songs are a little weak ("My heart is higher than a hawk") - To quote Howard himself at one of his concerts, "What was that one about?". And one is left with the feeling that the film wanted to be Annie Get Your Gun, but didn't quite make it.
But this is more than made up for by the shining light of Doris Day, who with the energy and the (often overlooked)comic talent she posessed gives us some memorable moments to treasure. Also her rare gift with a ballad was never shown better on film than with Secret Love, one of her most iconic songs.
Doris Day's best? Probably.
Howard Keel's? Nope - try Seven Brides.
Top Ten Musical? No. But it should still make it into any Musicals collection for the quality of the central performance
