Surreal and violent
Directed by Izo Hashimoto, who wrote Akira, this shares certain themes with the first film; there is a journalist as one of the central characters, the idea that people are conduits for greater evil, and a steady escalation of violence and gore that climaxes in almost unbearable levels of embryonic splatter horror. Make no mistake, this is not an easy film. It is redeemed by the startling photography, which focuses on the cold neon and water strewn city, using construction sites as places of evil. DVD transfer is excellent, extras nothing special.
