Just a castaway, an island lost at sea!
The second album marked a nice progression from the first and this is evident in the songs released as singles. The Police managed to find better fortune by the time of recording this album and had some more money to spend so that they could record when they wanted. They were an internationally recognised band and had got their feet under the table with AM recordings by 1979, as well as a US tour. They'd had chart success with Roxanne and Can't stand losing you, but as they were superstitious they used the same recording studio. Sting maintained his position as main songwriter. br / br /Message in a bottle kicks off the album in an amazing guitar riff, and one that Sting says he finally found a home for after about a year. It is one of my favourite Police songs and is definitely one of their most famous. Everybody recognises the opening guitar riff and most people, Police fans or not, are familiar with the song. It was the band's first number 1 success in the UK. In my opinion, it's the best song on the album and the sound is unique. Both Sting and Andy have confessed that this is their favourite song. Regatta de blanc, which is the band's second attempt at an instrumental, is one of my favourite instrumentals ever. It started out as a run away from the bridge of Can't stand losing you in the live performances, and turned into a song in its own right. It's alright for you is where you can really recognise the different style. The band stayed with the reggae sound which they placed on the 1st album, but the punk feeling is definitely softened down. It's definitely not 1 of my favourites on the album. Bring on the night has an incredible guitar sound and is something really intriguing. Sting says that he borrowed the first couple of lines from the second verse from a poem by T. S Eliot. It was written about the execution of the criminal Gary Gilmore and has a haunting feel to it. Deathwish is about reckless drivers and has a nice reggae feel to it. It has the same bass line from Can't stand losing you. It is one of the song's here which I feel is dragged out and whereas the previous album's songs were quite condensed this is one which isn't. Walking on the moon is another of the best songs and was released as a single. Hilariously it was created when Sting was in a hotel room, drunk and had a melody in his head with the lyrics 'Walking around the room'. He said he wanted to create something even crazier and the result was `walking on the moon`. The sound is so light and airy it really does have the feeling of weightlessness! On any other day has to be my least favourite song. It is the only Police song with lead vocals by Stewart and was written by him too. I really couldn't imagine Sting singing this. It has a lot of humour in it but really doesn't appeal to me. Leave the singing to Sting! The bed's too big without you definitely represents the most shallow feelings after ending a relationship. 'I made love to my pillow but it didn't feel right' conveys the humour in this sad song. There is a strong reggae feel in this song. Contact is an underestimated song I think. It does have a lot of depressing feelings to it but it really has a message which I'm sure a lot of people can relate to. It has a nice rock/reggae ambience and a good sound. One of the better non-singles and certainly the better of the Copeland penned songs. Does everyone stare has a dismal sort of feeling to it but is pretty good overall. Stewart Copeland supplies the barely audible vocals for the first verse with Sting picking up from there. It has humour in it but on the other hand is downtrodden in spirit. Something I can relate to. No time this time is something I'm sure many people can relate to in this busy world we live in, where love and romance is put to one side to try and get through our lives. It's quite depressing when you think about it but it's true. One of the better songs on the album and has a fast rhythmic feeling. Sting's vocals are really high pitched and it doesn't seem to stop. I guess this coordinates with the idea of the world turning and not letting us make time for people. br / br /Whereas Outlandos d amour had songs in it which were not released as singles and still grabbed your attention, this album has much less of that. I think this is The Police's worst album in terms of the non singles because there are so many fillers. It takes more time to get used to. Zenyatta mondatta is often put down as the worst album. This album has better singles on it than that one, but as far as the non singles go, Zenyatta mondatta wins in my opinion. The quality is better. A classic album this is, but definitely not their best. They were still to find their best sound but did maintain a great style, progressed with the sound and created good songs.

Brilliant drumming
This is my favourite Police album by a mile. Not a weak song anywhere. The different styles of drumming, bass playing and guitar all fuse together majically. Copelands songs are actually my favourites.

Some may say, I'm wishing my days away...
Classic album. A phrase often used, well for once the term is being applied wisely here. If i were to sit down and write down my top ten albums of all time this would be in there without hesitation. br / br /Regatta De Blanc musically was the Police masterpiece, recorded before the media frenzy had gathered speed, the band had such a tight schedule of world tours restricting their creativity, and written before the need to dial out all the reggae stuff that Middle America couldn't handle. br / br /This was as honest as the band got during recording an album and that is reflected in the feel and sound of the album. Sting, Andy and Stewart were really able to create the space around the instruments that became their trademark, and reached a standard of song writing that set standards of its own. br / br /The songs themselves have a natural feel to them, with each musician shining through. Stings jazz influenced bassline in bring on the night, Andy's performance in Walking on the moon, Stewart driving along Message in a Bottle... Some of the tracks towards the end penned by Stewart are not in the same mould as Sting's but their inclusion here shows that at the time this was recorded, the band were still experimenting and not yet expecting every track to be a final polished product. br / br /My summary of Regatta De Blanc is this. If an example is needed of a group finding their Mojo, this is it. br / br / br /

A true classic, like a fine wine it just gets better
I was bought this album when I was six years old and The Police have been my favourite band since. I can't tell you how many times I have listened to this album and I haven't got bored of it yet. I was so pleased when CDs came out because my original tape was getting worn out. I still listen to this album today and as I get older I seem to enjoy and appreciate it even more. Stand out tracks for me are 'Reggatta De Blanc', 'Bring On The Night', 'Beds Too Big' and 'Deathwish'. Everyone should have this album in their collection if they claim to like great music.

The boys are back in town....
I was a massive Police fan as a teenager,must've driven my poor parents mad going on and on about them. br /Have all their work on good old records so treated myself to this album on cd the other day. br /Loved it then and what do you know,adore it now. br /It really flows and illustrates what a musically tight band they were-"Message in a bottle","Bed's too big..","Bring on the night" still stand out.And have to agree with previous reviewer about "Does everyone stare"-Stewart should have written more like this. br /If you love The Killers,Orson, The Feeling, buy this coz the boys are back in town!
