Amazon.co.uk Review
Consciously crafted by director George Stevens as a piece of American myth making, IShane/I is on nearly everyone's shortlist of great movie Westerns. A buckskin knight, Shane (Alan Ladd) rides into the middle of a range war between farmers and cattlemen, quickly siding with the "sod-busters". While helping a kindly farmer (Van Heflin), Shane falls platonically in love with the man's wife (Jean Arthur, in the last screen performance of a marvellous career). Though the showdowns are exciting, and the story simple but involving, what most people will remember about this movie is the friendship between the stoical Shane and the young son of the farmers. The kid is played by Brandon De Wilde, an amazing child performer; his parting scene with Shane is guaranteed to draw tears from even the most stony-hearted moviegoer. And speaking of stony hearts, Jack Palance made a sensational impression as the evil gunslinger sent to clean house--he has fewer lines of dialogue than he has lines in his magnificently craggy face, but he makes them count. The photography, highlighting the landscape near Jackson Hole, Wyoming, won an Oscar. --IRobert Horton/I

unsurpassed western
"Shane" is, for people which possibly don't know what's this movie, a 40- 50 years anterior version of the modern well know "Pale Rider" by Clint Eastwood. This happens very much in today cinema when original ideas seems to have gone. br /And also here happens that "Pale Rider" is a good movie, but "Shane" is simply a masterpiece impossible to excel. You don't search explanations: simply, emotion, love, hate, fight and finally, violent death gets inside you much more deep in "Shane". br /And all that no matter some facts which should have played against this first version, as cinema of today have a colour fully adapted to the ambient, with much more means, etc, instead the crude old Technicolor with those tremendous blue skies, clouds, rain, sun rays, including I think Alan Ladd was a very limited actor, more static than Eastwood. Jean Peters and Van Heflin were much better. br /But for once, Ladd possibly made from his defaults, virtues, and he found here a full inspiration in a role as made to his measure incarnating Shane, the impassive professional gunman and murderer, but who preserves a hearth, and so, we feel how, silently, grows the love between Shane and Marian, the wife of Starret, the tenacious farmer, but unable with the revolver, so Shane understands he has to risk his life before to go forever, perhaps deadly wounded. Also, Jack Palance makes a superb play of his long list of bad, criminal men. You don't need in "Shane" cites from the Bible, nor callings to a miracle from heaven nor nothing else. Simply, director George Stevens shows here a true genius in making a jewel about a theme yet seen hundreds of times, with only regular means. All these is only possible very few times. br /

A Classic Western Tale.
This film is right up there with the must see classic westerns of all time. And while it may not be one of the best, it holds a place deep in the heart of all who've seen it. br / br /Set at a time when the gunfighter is a dying breed and folks are starting to get a mite civilized. Homesteaders are creating lives for themselves much to the anoyance of the big ranchers. Here we have Van Heflin struggling to keep his farm and fellow homesteaders together and standing firm against the local rancher intent on running them off the land. It's a great tale of a haunted hero trying to leave the past behind and move on to pastures new -only the mighty Jack Palance stands in his way. This is a gem of a movie and not to be missed. Adios.
