Tidy Tunes
There have been three great guitar [ish] albums of 2003 so far - The Mars Volta's 'De-Loused in the Comatorium', Super Furry Animals' 'Phantom Power', and this, the debut album from Liverpool's [via North Wales and the Czech Republic] Mountaineers. Like both of those albums, Messy Century joyfully splashes genre-bending colours all over the ultra-conservative indie blueprint. And unlike, say, The White Stripes' Elephant, which delights in wiping up whatever's left in the bottom of the blues barrel with a toerag, Messy Century defies cliche and paying an outmoded sense of respect to those who have gone before.

It's an album of great songs and great sounds [check out the wonderfully soulful 'All My Life' and the Jacob's Ladder electro flashbacks of 'Bom Bom' for the two extremes], all joined by an ethos of possibility. These songs, and Ceri's programming skills, scream about creative possibility, and the album positively bristles with vibrant ideas that you won't have heard anywhere else [Belgique Limb].

Mountaineers have been compared, most frequently, to the Beta Band. To my ears they have much more focus than the Beta Band, and their wonderful songs [and, they are songs - not simply noodlings or meanderings] have a much better chance of being assimilated into the mainstream. Lead track, and first single off the album, 'Ripen', is an excellent example of how commercial the band can sound. If the Neptunes had a mind to sieve Pentangle into an Air-shaped mixing bowl, it might sound like this. Might.

Buy this album if you harbour a love of melody and arrangement. The former are inspirational, the latter inspired.
