OH MY WORD...
This film is just amazing. Very silent, very real and very dark. I do like world cinema and films that uncover covered topics, that takes us through situations that we may only think of for a brief moment as we may not be able to handle the true depth of where the thought could go... Wether we've been in a situation like that or not.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FILMS OF ALL TIME
I don't quite understand why the BBFC gave an 18 Certificate. Every girl and young woman should see this movie. br /Oksana Akinshina brilliantly portrays the naive Lilya in this depressive but realistic film about a girl whose dreams of being elsewhere lead her into forced prostitution and... . Thanks to Lukas Moodysson's superb direction this film works without explicit and graphical contents (what a TALENTED director can do!) and Akinshina makes it believable. Seriously on my TOP 5 list.

Brilliant
Having just watched Show me Love i was eager to see other works by the director. I was not dissappointed! If you are not shell shocked after 10 minutes there is something wrong with you. A truely brilliant performance by the main characters. Without wanting to sound cliched, this film will stay with you along time after you have finished watching. Moodysson is one heck of a director.

Unremittingly depressing
Well, OK, we all know that parental neglect, pimping, child prostitution and violence, exploitation, drug addiction and child suicide go on, especially in connection with the former Soviet Union and this, I presume, is exactly what it looks like. If you wish to stare the worst this old world has to offer straight in the face, and say "bring it on" - then go for this film. But i warn you, its probably the most depressing film you will ever watch. br / br /If not, just keep the imagination in your mind, and avoid films like this which portray the reality in such stark terms.

Unfortunately true to life-even in the New Millenium!
Firstly I think that Okssana Akinshina and Artiom Bogucharskij played the 2 lead roles perfectly. The teenaged yet relatively unworldly Lilya is abandoned completely by her selfish mother who takes probably what is HER only opportunity to escape from the world of the old Eastern Bloc. The homes consist of tower upon tower of cell-like flats with no proper sanitation, heating, electricity etc.At this stage you would need an anti-depressant.Lilya is forced almost immediately to leave her flat for a smaller one where the tenant very recently died, and which is in worse condition.A young local boy has a crush on her and they become friends. Lilya has a girlfriend who she visits the city with and they visit clubs and bars and within a short time she is selling herself to pay for some of the nice things she sees others in life have. However she is drawn towards a person who she thinks is one thing but he is completely the opposite and I think the viewer can see this coming.I don't want to say more and give away the remainder of the story but her life then spirals downwards from here on.As a regular traveller to Moscow (and not just being born in Russia like one reviewer)with its Black Market goods including bananas which sell at £1 each ! ,St.Petersburg-rife with Aids sufferers, and many small villages where peasants routinely suffer from malnutrition, I feel I can say the locations ARE very real!
