Amazon.co.uk Review
Disney's 1994 animated feature, IThe Lion King/I, was a huge smash in cinemas and continues to enjoy life in an acclaimed stage production. The story finds a lion cub, son of a king, sent into exile after his father is deposed by a jealous uncle. The little hero finds his way into the "circle of life" with some new friends and eventually comes back to reclaim his proper place. Characters are very strong, vocal performances by the likes of Jeremy Irons, Nathan Lane and Whoopi Goldberg are terrific, the jokes are aimed as much (if not more) at adults than kids, the animation is sometimes breathtaking and the songs from Tim Rice and Elton John, accompanied by a colourful score, are more palatable than in many recent Disney features. --ITom Keogh/I p BOn the DVD:/B IThe Lion King Special Edition/I is a superb restoration: take a look at the serviceable but dull film clips incorporated in the plethora of extras and compare them to the vivid gorgeousness of the film presentation. This special edition also adds a 90-second song ("Morning Report") that originated in the lavish stage musical. To Disney's credit, the original theatrical version is also included, both restored and featuring two 5.1 soundtracks: Dolby Digital and a new Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix, which does sound brighter. As with the Disney Platinum line, everything is thrown into the discs, except an outsider's voice (the rah-rahs of Disney grow tiresome at times). The excellent commentary from the directors and producer, originally on the laser disc, is hidden under the audio set-up menu. p The second disc is organised by 20-minute-ish "journeys" tackling the elements of story, music and so on, including good background on the awkward Shakespearean origins at Disney where it was referred as "IBamlet/I". The most interesting journey follows the landmark stage production, and the kids should be transfixed by shots of the real African wildlife in the animal journey. Three deleted segments are real curios, including an opening lyric for "Hakuna Matata". Most set-top DVD games are usually pretty thin (DVD-ROM is where it's at), but the Safari game is an exception--the kids should love the roaring animals (in 5.1 Surround, no less). One serious demerit is the needless and complicated second navigation system that is listed by continent but just shows the same features reordered. I--Doug Thomas/I

An epic tale of vengeance and retribution
Probably the greatest Disney film of all time, the story is astounding, it's made for the kids obviously but adults will have an easier time understanding it, I feel anyway. br /The animation, as is natural for a Disney film, is amazing. br /I can't express how good this film is, watch it for yourself and make your own judgement!

Real dramatic animation that shocks and entertains
Simba learns about life through the wisdom of his father Mufasa whose brother is determined to be King of Pride Rock. br / br /The most touching of Disney pictures? With its hard approach to the circle of life, rivalry amongst family and responsibility there is no doubt that this is one of the toughest for family viewing. This is far from a bad thing. Too many movie are made to entertain, to make you laugh for £6 a cinema ticket or £14 for a DVD. But every so often you see a film worthy of any price tag that really makes your head throb and your heart ache, and it is even better to see in a family movie. br / br /Arguably, The Lion King has the best music score in Disney history with its Oscar winning score and memorable song "Can you feel the love tonight?" Opening the film we are entranced with the song "Circle of Life" which gets our blood pumping as we see animals arriving at Pride Rock to see the arrival of Simba, the future King. br / br /Then the adventure starts. Simba's encouraging personality to be the best inevitably gets him into trouble and the hard drama starts with the encoding of evil Uncle Scar and a trio of horrible hyenas. After a heart stopping twist (the bravest and sentimental moment to ever emerge in a Disney picture) do we see ideologies of life, responsibility and revenge encoded, all there right in front of us, to be interpreted in numerous ways and is so convincing you would be forgiven for being quiet for the rest of the day. br / br /Don't be put off by the heavy reflection of mature concepts as there is good humour, numerous entertaining protagonists and an action packed story. The use of these real life concepts is simply a splendid device to preach to the younger audience, to show them the point of life and its difficult issues, and what better way than a collection of likeable characters and easy to understand story. br / br /The plot is always consistent with frequent realism in context and the characters make for riveting viewing. Older audiences will appreciate Jeremy Iron's Scar whereas the younger viewers will take to the great comedy duo of Timon and Pumba. br / br /The Lion King has been made a classic through its action packed narrative, its exciting characters and importantly its flinching depiction of real life br / br /9/10

am i missing something here??
i've heard nothing but great things about this so i got a copy of the 2 disc version and sat down expecting to be entertained disney style!!! br /what a load of rubbish, first of all james earl jones has and always will be (unfortunetly for him) darth vader and i was just waiting for him to say to simba "i am your father" but its the story and the songs thats the biggest problem.the story has been seen 100 times before(i won't spoil it just in case you want to see the film) and for me just didn't work, the songs written by elton john are just poor they just don't fit the film, just think of classic disney songs/music used in disney films of the past dumbo, fantastia, snow white and of course the jungle book all great films where the songs fit perfectly in the lion king they are simply there for elton to sell a few million copies of the soundtrack. br /for me the only thing good here is timon pumbaa who are as funny as anything in any past disney film and save this from being as bad as the incredibles(simply awful).some people seem to love this film(watch nemo or the jungle book both much more fun) but my copy is back on ebay looking for a good home...any takers???
