Fantastic family film
I bought this DVD for my 11 year old daughter and an 18 year old who is like a daughter to me. br /I had told my daughter about a film that I had loved when I was little and she had wanted to watch it. Chloe has not stopped watching this film since it arrived!!!!!!! br /Emma, the 18 year old, loved watching it to! br /An excellent DVD that can be enjoyed by many. br /

Didn't know about it, now it's my n.1 kids movie
I found it by chance, bought it, loved it, lost it, re-bought it, wore it out, bought it again with Amazon (couldn't find it anywhere else) and still happy to sit next to my children as they watch it for the 24th time. br /The music by Barry Manilow is fun and catchy; the characters are lovely. Thumbalina is so pretty, sweet, different. But they all are nice (I personally love the Beetle). br /Finally, the motives of original Hans Christian Anderson fairytale are all there - not Disneyed or Barbied. There are many lessons to be learned here: self-confidence, dare to be different, love yourself even if you're different, true love vs marriage of interest, resilience, trust. All following with the natural flow of the seasons. br /I love this movie. br /I have a collection of around 100 kids movies - trust me: get a copy for your daughter. br /

nice to see a decent animated movie that isn't disney...
I saw this when i was a child and after watching a few clips of it on youtube i thought, considering it's £6, i would buy it. It was well worth my money: the songs are very catchy and the animation is quite good. However if you are unsure i think you should watch a clip on youtube first to see whether you'll like it.

Leave this thing up to Disney
I remember liking this film as a child, so at least on that level Thumbelina is a success for it is a film aimed for the children, but whilst many Disney films can still hold some of their magic for the older audiences, that is where Thumbelina falls down for once the viewer reaches the age where they become critical, then this film will give them much to be negatively critical about. br / br /I'd like to say that, visually at least, the film is just as stunning as anything I've seen Disney create. And even the story was enjoyable to watch. However, there were plot holes, the music never sounded original (even the main song 'Let Me Be Your Wings' sounded and looked like a rip off of Aladdin's 'A Whole New World'), and the passing of time was never clear, so you were never sure whether a couple minutes had passed or several months. The script was nothing special either, with very few laughs or witty comments, and all the characters felt like regurgitations of previous characters, cartoon or not. br / br /It is a sweet film, and I'll always be glad I watched it as a kid. I do regret however watching again now, many years later, and finally seeing the truth of what this film really is. I would have much rather be left with the magic.

Basically, a Disney-wannabe sub-par animated film.
Firstly, I loved this as a child, when I first saw it aged 7, then again at 9. I think then I was just easily pleased cause now, however, it strikes me as one of Bluth's most misguided and below average efforts - I can't think of any director that could've saved this unless they went back to the storyboard and scrapped it all and started again. br / br /Characters: A fundamental flaw in this is the title character herself: Thumbelina. Why? Well, she's frankly, annoyingly passive. She is pessimistic and despite initially complaining that she doesn't want to marry the Toad, Beetle and Mole, she still has a smile on her face and goes along with it all! The character's personality is very confused and highly unlikeable when she does all these things. br /Prince Cornelius - perhaps the ONLY character I like in the whole film! He behaves like a teen with the early flirting between him and Thumbelina and takes an active part in looking for her when she goes missing. br /I found the Jitterbugs nauseatingly cute and the anthropomorphic arms and legs just looked ridiculous. br /The toads were basically Latin stereotypes and the voices of the Beetle and the Field mouse were annoying. br /But the WORST character (apart from Thumbelina herself)was Jacquimo - what's Bluth's liking of these birds with French accents? He's so annoying, OTT and talkative. Instead of making this irritating bird the narrator, an unseen one would've worked better, I thought. br /Basically, non of the other characters - maybe apart from Cornelius - are of any value or interest. br / br /Pacing: Well, as said before, they needed to have scrapped this script and started all over from the beginning again with the storyboard. You can almost tell it's trying to tick of all the boxes that make Disney animated films work (not realizing this is a flat out bad idea - let Disney do Disney), and unsuccessfully trying to extend the fairy tale with cringe worthy and cheesy songs and sequences. br / br /Animation: It's just OK, but very flawed with some pretty scenes but what spoils it is the blatant, discernible CGI in the backgrounds - it looks very dated and more importantly unnecessary. br /Not to mention the character design is unoriginal - what's with the overly long hair Thumbelina has? Are they trying to copy the House of Mouse again? You also have the cutesy stuff at the farm and the Jitterbugs that's just very patronising and well, rubbish. br / br /Music: I only liked one song in it (Let Me Be Your Wings) and variations of it. The others: Follow Your Heart becomes increasingly sappy and annoying and Marry The Mole is just bad to me - did they really need those songs there? One is enough and the others just seem like they were added in to extend the running time. Even Let Me Be Your Wings was my fave it could be seen from another viewpoint as a far too syrupy sweet ballad. br / br /Overall, it's a third or fourth rate Disney fare without heart (that makes you care about the character after all her whinging) or a good heroine. br /Seriously the Russian "Dyuymovochka" is ten times better than this to me, and more faithful to the spirit of the original fairy tale, even with the lack of English subtitles!
