Does the job but limited lifespan
We have had 2 Dysons now and it is obvious that they are manufactured not too last, they do the job great when they are working.But this on lasted us just over 2 years with the motor starting to play up by cutting out as though it was overheating after 15 minutes use,and the hoses splitting on us.
All of todays machines are built the same though to last no more than 2-5 years and needing parts along the way which is nothing unusal initself but the parts that go are just another money making spin off for the comapnies concerned and it's not just Dyson that uses these tricks

Interesting design, effective, but not especially well made
Actually I wouldn't rave about this machine. The design certainly is interesting, and the DC04 does do a good job, picking up all manner of dust and muck from carpeted floors and rugs, but I found it of limited use on any other surfaces (hard floors? forget it). Most importantly, the build quality is on the flimsy side. There are a lot of thin plastic parts waiting to break here. Personally I think these machines are made down to a tight price, and I doubt very much whether mine will last more than a couple of years of average weekly use. In fact, the hose has already developed a hole at its top mounting (obvious weak spot) after only 12 months service.

Not bad, but there are better machines around for similar or even less money. I would shop around.

hold on to your carpets.
well what can i say about this little beauty,my old hitachi bagged cleaner was just not doing what it was bought for,so following a good trawl around amazon i settled for a dyson.as expected the cleaning/suction ability is beyond reproach and the resulting results excellent,ive seen dirt i didnt know existed,but thats to be expected with a dyson.the best features of the dyson is that you can actually see the dirt as its picked up,you see when the cylinder is full and emptying it is a breeze,all the tools required for the various cleaning jobs fit on board the machine so are always at hand.ingeniously the hose attachment is part of the handle and can easily stretch up my 16 steps flight,the initial blast of suction when using the hose is quite powerful but once you get used to it,its no big deal.as regards to the weight and noise of the machine,i have found it to be no heavier than any previous machine i have used and the dyson is certainly more manouverable,noisewise again its no worse than any other machine i have encountered.
the plastic material used in the construction does look a bit cheap however i didnt buy it for how it would look but for how it would suck,and on that respect it fulfills all expectations and more,very highly recommended.

fantastic
I had a DC01 which gave me over 8 years of faithful , and I thought , excellent daily service - I have never had to call the Helpline. Last week it gave up the ghost and so we replaced it with the DC04 which arrived this morning.
I gave the house a once over and I am amazed at the suction of the new machine - wow doesn't really do it justice. Now I see how ill my poor DC01 must have been for sometime , it really was time for a new one .
Here's hoping this one lasts as long ( mind you it was half the price I paid 8 years ago so that might be asking a bit much)

More than
Our old Dyson a DC01 finally bit the dust after 8 years of almost constant use. Saw this one at a good price and went for it. This vacuum is unbelievable. Gave it a quick try out and could not believe how much dust and other dirt it brought to view. OK so the Dyson may be a bit noisier than other vacuums who cares because the quality of cleaning is amazing.
