RVW seems to be setting out to out-Puccini Puccini in the achingly gorgeous tunes that permeate this work, and its a shame that he never felt drawn to spin this into orchestral form at a later date.
br /Still, all that said, this is a really beautiful record, performed with utter conviction as a romantic romp with undercurrents in the score of real emotion- and as I've indicated, the tunes are really lovely. Think of it as a precursor of Rogers and Hammerstein and switch off any cynicism and there is so much to enjoy that it has to be part of any RVW fan's collection
