Editorial reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Although there have been plenty of decent Star Wars games in the past, LucasArts have had a lot of trouble producing a top quality game based on the new prequels--but Republic Commando looks like it could change all that.

Republic Commando puts you in a four man squad of elite clonetroopers, that act as a sort of SAS version of the standard stormtrooper-alikes seen in Episode II. It’s your job to order the squad about while engaging in a spot of first person shooting action as you go. In other words it’s Star Wars does Rainbow Six--the squad-based shooter being just about the only genre of game that hasn’t been Star Warsified up until now.

Surprisingly things seem to be turning out rather well with some decent graphics and an easy to use, if slightly perfunctory, squad control interface. The game also takes much inspiration from the GameCube’s Metroid Prime with an excellent helmet view that does a lot to immerse you in the game and convince you that you really are the sci-fi version of Andy McNab.

Perhaps the only problem evident at this stage is that the battles are noticeably smaller scale than the ones from the movie with rarely more than half a dozen enemies attacking at any one time, rather than the hundreds seen in the film. An online multiplayer mode should help to shore things up somewhat, although the artificial intelligence of the bad guys is good enough to ensure you can still have plenty of fun on your own. --David Jenkins

    A good buy
I recently bought this game to cheer myself up and boy did it do the trick. This game pleasantly suprised me with the quality of the graphics and although the game play is fun it lacks an air of difficulty. Republic commando allows you to control a team of 4 commandos during the clone wars and as another suprise doent contain jedis. You follow the back story line which is nice as it seems the game doesnt have to follow a srtict line to please fans, which gives it an air of mystery, which can only help its overall fun factor. All in all a good buy (special at the price i bought it for) that will entertain you for a while.

    Halo turns Star Wars
This game is amazing, if maybe a bit short. It has great graphics runs just fine, it is overall a great game and i would recommend it. It is similar to Halo.

    Nice but short
Yes! A lightsaber free Star Wars game! About time too.

I was addicted to this game at first, I really was. But after 2 6 hours sessions of playing it (estimate) it just finishes. The shortest game ever. But on a positive angle, Lucasarts didn't have much of an oppurtunity to mess it up. So what's in the game, you'll like.

The game takes place from the end of Episode II and leads up to roughly the beginning of Episode III. You play as the same character, a squad commander, all the way through the game. This is a great point about Republic Commando, it differs from the other Star Wars games with how you don't play as a famous character. Actually there's only references made to famous characters, and you only see 2 famous character for about 5 seconds. If you want to know who, then you see Yoda for a short piece of dialogue as a hologram, and one mission allows you to see General Grievous.

The game takes you through 3 areas (yes, only 3) with about 5 "levels" in each of them. 15 levels sounds like a lot but not when they're as short as they are here. You visit Geonosis, a ghost-ship like Clone cruiser thingy and Kashyyyk. The environments are graphically good, not much to say about them though.

Multiplayer is boring. More fun to be had in single player so I wouldn't bother with it.

Might as well buy it, wether you like Star Wars or not. FPS fans should go for it though, definately.

What? A Star Wars game with no Jedi?
Say it isn't so. 'Fraid it is. And all the better for it.

I've been waiting for something like this after the Dark Forces games - I wanted an opposite game that made you play as a stormtrooper, helping the Empire take over the galaxy (evil laugh inserted here). This game is set during SW: Episodes 2 and 3 and you don't even see a hint of Jedi - only other troopers on the ground. The best thing about this is that you feel that if you're on a covert operation, then you're on a covert operation. If there's a large battle going on and you're in the centre, then you see ships flying around in the background shooting stuff. Music and sound is top notch (as is seen in the extras). But mainly it's when "a plan comes together" that makes this fun.

The team control system is easy to use - you don't ask your comrades to walk here, then there, then crouch over there. No, you get to command sniper positions, breaching doors, slicing systems using Wookie bodies as cover and killing stuff that explodes vital fluids onto your visor if you get too close. I cheered when that first happened. And I still don't feel guilty now.

But. It's not always easy to aim your rifle (there's no "centre" to your reticle); a couple of the later situations you're put in require you to run under a hail of gunfire and try to stick it out - not good as then it's a matter of luck. And it does feel repititive after you've played over an hour.

At the time of this review, this costed under a tenner. It's a great blast and you'll want more after you've finished - if only just to see something explode again.

Best ever game, don't borrow you're cousins for cash...
The first time I saw this game, I thought it was gonna be absaloute crap!!! Then I went to see my cousin and he had it, we played on it and it was BLASTINGFULLY AMAZING (awesome). This game is packed with great graphics, awesome characters, another side of the clones which was shown possibly once in episode 3, but was not exaturated, awesome enviroments and weapons in FIRST person! First person games like this don't come around often. I owe my cousin a fiver for playing on it an hour... but hey, the more the merrier it is! I found this game the best game on my computer (I put it's name as best game on pc). I highly recomend this to any star wars fan, even if you only like the films slightly! The best thing about this game is the characterization and behind the film-scenes. Like the blokes you play as have nothing like the personality of the clones in the films, they don't just respond to any old command; the fight and negotiate it. The other bit is experiencing the clones feelings, like in the unhappy ending, and the battles. You get to find out what happens without the Jedi (as their is only a hologram of THE ONLY jedi in the game) and the clones experiences. The story line's a bit naf, but how to play the game is blinking awesome and worth to die for! If you want another game to find the experiences of the infantry, I recomend Star wars Battlefront 1, as 2 has all the jedi ect. Any strong Jedi fan, this game is unrecomended as there hardly is a Jedi in all the game play.
