Seeped in atmosphere and human reflectionI have been a fan of Anime films since the release of Akira in the UK back in the early 90s. I saw this when it was shown a number of years ago on channel 4, and I was quietly moved. The music, composed by the great cellist Kenji Mizoguchi, is absolutely sublime juxtaposed to the visuals, and one of my all-time favourite Anime scores.

br /If you are familiar with the more inner, mediative works of Takeshi Kitano, or the reflective solopsistic ponderings of Wings of Honneamise (another masterpiece of understanted Anime), then you will appreciate the calmness and slowly unfolding emotional impact of this film. The scene where the main Jin-roh soldier sharing moments with the suicide bomber girl's older sister on the roof, and the moment she asks him to find the humanity within himself to remember that time and not kill her, is an extremely powerful and emotional scene raising questions of de-sensitization in the military and the methodical deconstruction of the human spirit. What makes a man a human, and what sets us apart from animals? Or Wolves?

Woeful attempt at a semi-serious animeOnce again we have a special police unit with the usual monosylabic member questioning his loyalty etc and a willful young girl who waxes philosphical in a most patronising manner (at least it would be if any of the cast had an ounce of intellect). Yes these characters are the tired staples of Japanese anime convention that I personally have seen enough of (this is to say nothing of the supporting cast). The entire film revolves around a ponderous analogue to the story of little red riding hood: offering nothing more than an absolutely superficial gloss on a tired and witheringly mundane story.

br /The animation is excellent and I get the feeling this would have made a far more effective silent short. It may not sound like it but I do consider myself a fan of anime, however this film shows very little of what the genre has to offer.

Jin Roh: The Wolf BrigadeOne of the best films I watched while I was on hols recently.brIt's set in the near future in Japan. Terrorist organisations have been driven underground (literally) by the police where they have formed into a single group called The Sect. This group combining their strength has now become stronger and better armed than the police, so another group has been formed to deal with the threat. They are a very highly armoured, trained and equipped military group.brHowever, within this military group resides a secret click called Jin Roh, or, The Wolf Brigade.brThe Wolf Brigade watch everyone. The Terrorists, The Police, The Government, and themselves.brThe Military are so succesfull that the terrorist threat is brought down to such a level that the Government no longer needs two tiers of policing, one can be disbanded....but which one, and this is where the film begins.pOn his last mission Fuse comes across a "Red Riding Hood" a young girl carrying a satchel bomb, he freezes instead of shooting, and the girl blows herself up.brFuse is brought up on charges, and the police see there opportunity for a coup. Fuse is sent back to training camp. While off duty he visits the girls grave, only to find her sister there, almost an exact double of the girl.pFuse, who looks and acts as though he has a serious trauma over what he has seen, befriends the girl....but, is she really her sister?pThat's all I'm telling you, watch the film. Any Anime fans will be impressed with this flick. it has a very serious plot, and a good level of visual to tell the story.
