An excellent piece about Autism
Now, being a person who suffers from Aspergers Syndrome (usually a mild form of autism but there are different levels of, like autism itself, Aspergers.) I for one am on the higher achiever end but have mixed with people like the character of Raymond from the film and I have to say that this is one of my personal favourites as the characters are nicely developed and underplayed. All the actors are excellent in their roles and Tom Cruise, for once, doesn't try to steal the show, neither does the woman who plays his girlfriend. The person who especially makes this film a masterpiece is Dustin Hoffman for his portrayal of Raymond,who suffers from severe autism. br / br /The plotline sees arrogant car dealer Charlie Babbett (Cruise) discover that the money from his late father's will, will go to Raymond Babbett (Hoffman), Charlie's long lost older brother. As a result he convinces his female colleague and girlfriend that they will visit Raymond at Walbrook Institution. Charlie then decides to kidnap Raymond until he gets his share from his fathers will. They then travel around America and, at first, Charlie virtually refuses to accept Raymond as his brother but as the days go by he soon learns that it's not the person on the outside that counts but it's more about the person on the inside that does. br / br /An excellent film that is emotional but without being overly-sentimental and deservedly won the Oscars it got. *****
