the continued masterful strengths of Ms Jackson
as an overview i must say that since Control in 1986 Janet has never ever flopped an album all five of which i find to be true RB classics and a good few even make for the greatest produced albums of all time(Control, Rhythm Nation,Janet and The Velvet Rope are each influential to me and many famous artists). br / All For You was a stunning comeback album after a hiatus of four years it had a very fresh sound and made for an astounding album certainly the best of 2001!! and still today makes me smile with each song standing out from the crowd. br /now Damita Jo (from the cover alone) may appear as something Janet has explored several times before so some may even look past it and dismiss as a regurgitation of Janet.,Velvet Rope and All For You...but she has done it again and explored a new meaning to sexuality here...her own identity with it. br /the interludes on offer here are once again amazing and strong as any other adding sensual entanglement to the whole album making seem as though it comes alive once you have heard it. br /overall this album may not be of a classic or an epic status of her previous five stunning albums, but i must say Janet has given us all a lot of material to endure here. br /albeit there are a couple songs here that may not be to my taste which i find to be a shame, but overall this was a real corker of an album when it was released in 2004 and the commercial criticism hasn't altered the fact that although it is neither epic nor influential, it is a fun and unique gem that thus far has sold nearly four million copies to date. br /as an overview- br /Control-10/10 br /Rhythm Nation 1814-10+/10 br /Janet.-10/10 br /The Velvet Rope-10+/10 br /All For You-10/10 br /Damita Jo-9/10 br / br /my opinion is that if you don't already own the previous five albums i would start with those as they are true unbeatable epic albums that stand the test of time, and if you do and don't already own Damita Jo you had better way order it today. br /next up-Janet jackson 20 y.o and Discipline. br /

Audio Bubblegum for Control Volume VI ?
Well because anytime JJ (or J as she prefers to distance herself from the Madness of King Michael) is stuck for ideas, the team default to the generic formula tried to such effect in 1986. Staccatto vocal, lashed tightly over millimetrically precise drum and bass programming. Sparse digital production et voila! Control was so strong it caused her brother to delay the most important release of his life (following up Thriller) by a further year. br /But it's just sooooo last century now, because everybody (and I mean everybody) has done it since. Every long legged, doe eyed, big booty, prancing vocal lightweight to tumble into their Matel box from the MTV production line has done this from Paula Abdul (check all boxes except leg length) to Jamelia and now of course Rhianna. br /Chew on the first few tracks and you get a great slug of flavour that is generic 21st C Flyte Tyme. Chew a bit more and you get some pastiche social(lite) commentary. Just before it sours it's time for the inevitable soft porn bit then you get a final interlude or epilogue or whatever, and then you spit it out. Tear open a packet of Shakira and repeat, all the while performing completely irrelevant tasks like cleaning your nails, or filing your teeth. br /And while we are on - those interludes? segue? links? Ohh you know, the talky bits in the middle. 22 years ago it was different, even daring when Sigue Sigue stuck adverts in the middle and was meant to turn a loose collection of songs in to a themed audio-play. Ask your mum if she still has Alexander O'Neal's HEARSAY and you'll see how it was meant to be done. When played on a "WALKMAN" they were more interesting than breaking the seven seconds silence with hissy white noise, so you wound happily through them, but the added bitz are now frankly irrelevant. The iPod generation don't understand the limitation of the reel tape concept and these quickly become very tiresome not to mention damned inconvenient to your playlists. br /I'd like to give it more consideration but J didn't so why should we. Buy it, chew it, throw it and then try a stick of Mya, Girls Aloud or maybe Leona..... br /

and after all the nonsensensical reactions.....a masterpiece
Look at the reviews, even from fans--some, desperately loyal defenders touting the most rb tracks in their ex-princesses' defence, many more becoming attackers regretting the downfall that they percieve to be continuing from 'All For You'and before. But forget Ms Jackson's falling sales, forget the fans who're forsaking her or disappointed in her. Ms Jackson's last four records have got better and better and this is a wonderful artistic triumph.pJanet has been in hiding. This record was panned by critics, its sales were judged poor, there was no supporting tour, its supposed sexuality was laughed at as cheap and foolish. But it is misguided to lump Janet in with Madonna, Mariah, etc and the rest of the hit-or-miss MTV divas of the past ten years. That is not the context in which this record will grow through time. It is not Janet's current fans who will decide history's view of this record, it is future's own as yet unknown music lovers. I call this record wonderful not as a Janet Jackson fan, but as an astonished soul/jazz/blues/pop fan who knows that the great soul records of the last 35 years are What's Goin On, Curtis, Riot Goin On, Dirty Mind, Funkadelic, early Isaac, Al.pSo, Damita Jo: the rb workouts like Sexhibition, All Nite and RB Junkie are tight, funky, cool--very good and enjoyable, fine, but not amazing. Then there are the fun, poppy, mellow and lovely Spending Time, Island Life, Just A Little While. All this would be a very lovely way to pass the time, a record well worth buying, but maybe not quite a record to cherish, love, adore and defend. But I Want You is joyous. And the track Damita Jo is complex, intricate, brilliant soulful. The much maligned short spoken tracks add to the confessional and personable atmosphere, with their musical backgrounds and the intimate voice--unlike 99% of 'never-play-again' hip-hop skits, these add to the whole. With all this, we are now talking a very very good record. But there's better.pSlo-love is a magical pop trance groove classic near the end, while Strawberry Bounce and My Baby near the start, both featuring Kanye West (and they would be pure stand-outs on even his great first record)are astonishing. She'll never have the range of Carey nor the raw edge of Bligh--but it's what you do with what you've got that counts. The multi-tracking, the whispered singing, the sweetness and soul of these two vocals make for contrasting masterpieces combining desire, need, devotion, passion, lust, cheekiness, groove and eroticism. Does that make them sound too intense? They are in fact, like the rest of Damita Jo, a whole lot of fun!pLater on, the record becomes a roller-coaster of human feeling on yet more classic tracks--Like You Dont Love Me is wondrous and sexy, a masterfully controlled vocal, listen to that burning edge, followed by the melancholy deep sweep of Thinkin About My Ex, then straight into Warmth and Moist. These latter two have been much attacked 'embarrassments'; well I can only speak as the man I am--the vocals are sensual, expressive, right to the heart, mind and body, the images and music are a burning turn on, erotically intense and real, and are another dimension of the wonderful and majestic whole that is Damita Jo. pMs Jackson, a young and successful singer, has grown in time--'Janet' was her best yet, 'Velvet Rope' pushed further, 'All For You' better than all before. Guiltily, we hardly noticed how good she'd got. And Damita Jo surpasses all. The absurd overeaction to a bejewelled nipple did not scare her into withdrawing Warmth, etc, thank God. But she now must be pondering, perhaps fearful and hurt, on the back of some absurd criticisms. Ms Jackson, do not cower. You are an artist, with human relationships as your subject matter, in all their deliciousness, sensuality, desire, hope and feeling . Good luck in your next ventures: be unafraid, be brave, be bold, be yourself....be Damita Jo.

Falls Short. WELL Short.
''Damita Jo'' was a big deal for Janet Jackson - this needed to be a truly unmissable album to bring her back to form. It's unfortunate then, that the vast majority of this album is totally forgettable. The over-long album seems to go on forever with one sloppy RB ballad after another. Jackson's vocals have been lost in the production of Jam and Lewis which is totally dispensible more times than not on this album.p"Damita Jo" gets 3 stars because it has a couple really outstanding tracks. ''All Nite (Don't Stop)'' is a wonderful House-fused RB Crossover record that has a huge appeal. The production is very ''busy'' with lots of different sounds, but the track is infectious to the last and a real winner. ''Slolove'' follows suit, although it's not so accomplished. The other single ''Just A Little While'' has good mainstream rock-style hooks and is a pretty good track overall. ''RB Junkie'' is the only other track worth mention. The rest of the album falls into the ''instantly forgotten" category - 4 decent tracks just isn't good enough and ''Damita Jo'' falls well short of the mark.

Up's and Down's
First off, i'm a Janet fan. I've loved her music since the beginning of time (well, when she started!) and even though the last album (All For You) was a bit of a let down, i was hoping for something stronger in Damita Jo.pIn my opinion, this album has it's high points and it's low points. The low points being the "sexy" songs which Janet just sounds like, well...desperate. The high points are definetly the singles (including the US only released I Want You) along with "RnB Junkie", "Thinkin Bout My Ex" and "My Baby".pIf Janet had used these songs on All For You and merged them together, we would have a very strong album. Thiso n the otherhand, doesn't seem to go anywhere...if you like going up and down mountains, then this is for you
