Good for inspiration...
Actually I bought this lamp to find out how it worked - electronically. I wanted to create my own multi-colour fade lamp using a PIC microcontroller and I thought that I could do it better than this lamp.

I was correct (not being big-headed I hope) as I have created a much better lamp (with many more colour fades) than this lamp for a cheaper price. The most important thing though is that my lamp is much, much, brighter than the Mathmos Blimp because I used a 3w RGB LED. This lamp is a good lamp, but the fades it comes with are the fades you get for all time, the speed it fades at is the speed it fades at for all time. With the lamp I created (using this as inspiration) I can choose what colours I fade to, I can choose how long a fade takes, I can choose whether it holds the colour for a period of time - and, unlike the Blimp, my lamp is bright.

So... because the Blimp is not bright enough, it has now gone to my mother who has put it on the windowsill. Pros - nice glass package, nice on/off switch (you just press on it)... cons - expensive, not bright enough, not customisable in any way - a couple of small switches could've easily taken care of this.

Great while it lasts
Great while it works, but if it goes wrong, look out. I bought two for my children and after a few months the light on both units began to flicker. Repeated emails to Mathmos for help/advice/replacement were ignored, without even an acknowledgement being given: zero post sales service in my case despite manufacturer's guarantee.

Mighty Mathmos
Mathmos have come up trumps, updating their funky seventies styled lighting for the millenium. The blimp is great, completely mesmerising and adds a warm glow to the room. It gently changes through the colour spectrum in a soothing way. One of the best things about the blimp is that it remains completely cold and is therefore ideal to use in a child's room as a nightlight.
