Editorial reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
Though this film is a relatively minor one in the massive canon of Peter Sellers, it has moments of absolute hilarity. Written and directed by Blake Edwards, one of Sellers' most fertile collaborators, the film stars Sellers as a would-be actor from India (let them try to get away with that today) who is a walking disaster area. After ruining a day's shooting as an extra on a film, he finds himself unintentionally invited to a big Hollywood party. That's pretty much it as far as plot goes, but Edwards and Sellers know how to milk a simple idea for an unending string of slapstick gags. The result is a film that is episodic and sketchy but also frequently loony in an inspired way. I--Marshall Fine/I

A Laugh a minute!!
It's been a long time since i'd seen this film and it just got better with time. Peter Sellers has to be one of the greatest actors. A truly funny film for all the family.

Peter Sellers' concert
A perfect comedy despite being quite unknown. I would recommend it for every fan of Peter Sellers. Many comic situations and incredible Peter Sellers' performance. He was one of the best comedy actors ever.

Outstanding
This is one of my favourite films, and has been ever since I first saw it. br / br /Peter Sellers plays an Indian actor with great dignity and honour, as well as some delightful Clouseau-esque tomfoolery. The plot is very simple - Sellers is accidentally invited to a high class party, and wanders through the luxurious house, interacting with the other guests and catering staff. br / br /What I most admire about this film is the way the viewer is invited into the party with such intimacy. There are several sub-scenaria, into which Sellers wanders. Each time I watch The Party I notice something extra "out of the corner of my eye" in these scenes. It is quite exquisite. br / br /How to compare it? I suppose there is an element of Inspector Clouseau, but this is not the most powerful ingredient. I cannot think of another film that occupies the same place as this one. There is a feel of mid-to-late 1960s psychedelia, and also a degree of the dominant, older generation letting its hair down yet remaining staid. br / br /Definitely recommended.

Cinematic brilliance
Sellers was a true comic genius, especially when compared with others who have attracted similar praise more recently. This film is a fine display of his talents.

one of the best P Sellers movies
This must be without the best portrayal of an Indian character in the film industry. At the same time the movie utilised some ground breaking technical techniques (as explained on the second DVD) that were used ever since as a standard (such as instant video reviewing of scenes, provision of only a loose scripting framework with much of the moves and dialogue developing on set, and more). br / br /If you need a guaranteed laugh this is the movie for you. Mr Bean is a pale shadow in comparison (and that is not saying that you have to like Mr Bean to like this movie ...) br /
