Cult Nostalgia Value PackI loved the first Hellraiser when it first came out in 1987.
On repeated viewings it's flaws became all the more apparent, but because of it's cult appeal and personal nostalgia value it has remained a grotesque favourite of mine.
Now whereas I appreciate the fact that films 2 and 3 are indeed splendidly uncut, the first film doesn't seem any different from my video edition.
During the 'story so far' section at the beginning of Hellbound, and the international trailer as well, we get to see the uncut destruction of Frank. But it isn't like this in the first film. Mind you this is just a niggle in what is otherwise a good box set, and considering I managed to obtain it for a very small price from elsewhere (sorry Amazon) it is still worth owning.
I won't bother going into the stories of each film but will give my ratings for each of them and a brief explanation as to why -
Hellraiser - 3.5 out of 5 / Flawed horror classic.
Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 - 3 out of 5 /
As sequels go, bold and bloody but still flawed.
Hellraiser 3: Hell On Earth - 1.5 out of 5 /
Pinhead goes mainstream and becomes a wise cracking goof ball. Inventive stuff nevertheless.
The extras on all three of the first discs are not bad on the goodies front, but particularly illuminating are Clive Barker's opinions, and the cast and crew interviews.
The 4th disc has Barker's first two experimental films (Salome & The Forbidden) - 2 out of 5 /
Love em or hate em first time efforts are worth viewing but do not exactly beg for repeated viewings. Still quite interesting.
A full screen presentation of Hell On Earth is also included.
If you're not a fan, this is still worth investigating.

Why no Bloodline? This is a great treat for Hellraiser fans.
Containing the first three films in the saga, "Hellraiser", "Hellbound - Hellraiser II" and "Hellraiser III - Hell on Earth", each movie comes with numerous extras, such as interviews with creator Clive Barker and Pinhead actor Doug Bradley, plus theatrical trailers and tv spots.
Each disc has a stylish selection menu and the box art is very nice, with a small booklet insert containing a brief history of the films.
The picture and sound quality for each film is also superb. To anyone who brought the previous DVD releases, especially of the first film, which had very poor picture quality, the image is now crystal clear.
The only gripe I have is why was the fourth film "Hellraiser - Bloodline" not included? The first four films all have a link somewhere in the film to eachother.
Hellbound is set right after Hellraiser, Hell on Earth has a cameo appearance of Kirsty via a videotape of her time at the mental institution from Hellbound, and then Bloodline has the strange puzzlebox building in it seen at the end of Hell on Earth.
The next few films, Inferno, Hellseeker, Deader and Hellworld could then be placed in a 'volume 2' package.
Still, this is the best presentation of the first three Hellraiser films to date, so I suggest you start your collection on DVD from here.

If their's a new wave i'll be the first in line
oh.......MY......GOD!!!!!! this is truely the best set of films known to the human race. It has the best acting i have ever seen with a kick ass soundtrack that will blow you'r pants of! Dole dave's performance in this film is mind-blowing and the special effects created by jungle jim shuagnessey are top quality! Why he wasn't hired by pete jackson for T.L.O.T.R is above me(what a fool!!). Anyway make sure you buy this set, cause if you don,t then pennywise will come and get you with the help of amy McIver.
