In it for the long run
I've had a couple of years of listening to this album now, first my son's copy and now my own. The first couple of tracks make the biggest impact initially but there are other strong songs in there with thought-provoking lyrics and good hooks that worm their way into your good books if they don't grab you straight away. Those lyrics are mostly reflective rather than upbeat. People who say it all sounds the same aren't listening - these guys vary the tempo and time signature, they use acoustic guitar from time to time and sometimes you can hear the keyboards too. The "Drop-D down a full tone" power chords tend to dominate, though, so I'll give it 4/5.

Excellent album
This album is really good if you are into post-grunge. I bought in when i heard "Crash" and was impressed, and the rest of the album is just as good. Paul McCoy (who appears on Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life" is one of the best vocalists alive, and he delivers all of the catchy choruses really powerfully. The album is consistently good, and never loses momentum. Highlights are "Crash", "Bitter" and "Speak Your Mind", and you'll be humming them all day.

A great musical improvement
If you haven't heard of 12 Stones before, you'll have to listen to the track clips to decide if you like them. I'll be explaining how Potter's Field compares to the band's debut self-titled CD.

There is less of singer Paul's McCoy's screaming and no rapping but he has a better range of singing. Drummer Aaron Gainer has taken on the backing vocals and is particularly good on Shadows and In Closing.

One complaint I had about the debut was that a couple of the songs sound similar. This CD has a good mix of styles. There is aggression in Far Away and 3 Leaf Loser and slower songs like Bitter and Stay. Unfortunately, there are few guitar solos and whilst the music is good, the tunes aren't as memorable as on the previous CD. For this reason, I find it hard to listen to all the way through.

The quality of the lyrics has improved but I feel that there is less variation in themes. It all seems to be about needing someone or not being brought down by others. Finally, whilst the debut CD had a couple of blatant religious references in the lyrics, leading to constant Christian Band labelling, this one doesn't. However, one could find ways of interpreting the lyrics so that they are about God. Whether or not that is a bad thing is up to you.

So much potential. A shameful second album.
I absolutely loved 12 Stones' debut self-titled album, but this just doesn't sit with me.

It's much more dreary, and you can literally sing along some of the bands older songs over the top of these new ones and they fit perfectly.

Listening to the album all the way through with no break leads you to wonder where one track ends and another one starts, such is the startling similarity of each track.

12 Stones had the potential to be Wind-Up Records' biggest name, but since their debut album, Evanescence have come up and taken that crown. If I was the manager of Wind-Up right now, I'd be giving a serious think about letting them loose on a third album.

excellent second album
Previous fans of 12 stones first cd will find the second cd to be a great development. Like the first album, this really is music from the soul and rocks at the same time. It's still strange how such great music is not getting much recognition in the UK. If you're a fan of modern rock music get 12 stones. You won't be dissapointed.
