Amazon.co.uk ReviewStar Wars meets
Wagon Train as a futuristic flotilla of ragtag explorers search for a mysterious savior planet known only as "Earth," while being pursued by the dreaded Cylons (cybernetic tin-can baddies with vocal patterns that closely resemble a Speak & Spell game). This theatrical feature culled from the first and fourth episodes of the fondly remembered TV show is hilariously dated (the preponderance of polyester outfits and astrology motifs have the unfortunate effect of making the future look like an giant interstellar singles bar), but that only adds to the retro charm. An irresistibly cheesy blast from the past for Gen-X nostalgia-hounds, with impressive visuals by effects legend John Dykstra and a special appearance by teenybopper guru Rick Springfield. --

Good drama and sci-fi romp, not particularly deepBattlestar Galactica was one of those late 70s / early 80s shows which quickly entered into popular culture. It has an excellent cast, including Starbuck (played by Dirk Benedict) who is a smoking, drinking, gambling, womanising pilot (with marked similarities to the Han Solo persona) and the more serious Captain Apollo (Richard Hatch) who is son of Commander Ardama (more like the serious foil / Luke Skywalker role). Commander Adama (Lorne Greene - from Bonanza) plays the main role as the serious commander of the Galactica ship.
Despite all the song and dance made of the similarity with Star Wars (Ep IV), this is a separate idea, and has more in common with a US military operation which operates like an aircraft carrier. The nice twist here is that they are carrying civilians too and are the last survivors of the cylon attack. It was a great idea for a series but after the first season it was clear they were starting to run out of ideas within the sitcom formula. The movie is a good entry point and will let you know whether you want to expore further - but be warned it is normally included in most versions of series 1 (1978) so you will end up buying it twice if you decide you like this. Also will be interesting for people who have seen the re-imagining and want to know how it all began.

BEWARE: Not Anamorphic RatioGreat film, which was shown in cinemas, edited from the Original TV Series. Having already purchased the Complete Series boxset, I got this thinking it would be Anamorphic. This should basically mean Widescreen filling 16:9. Unfortunately this is 4:3 Letterbox with black bars, so some of the resolution is lost. Just a warning, if anyone is bothered by this. I'm not sure whether the Region 1 version has been mastered correctly.

NOT THE SERIES, but a fine film.Ok, to try and straighten this out: This is NOT any of the 3 seasons of the current and excellent series of BSG, or the excellent 2 part pilot episode that preceded the current series. This is the film, based very closely around the book from which it all started, that preceded the original and somewhat dodgy 1970 tv series which is also out on DVD. As to the film itself, I cannot really say truthfully as to whether or not this is a good film- that I'll leave to the opinionated critics. I personally believe this is an excellent film that holds true to fans of the book in every respect. If you can stand the very 1970s "special" effects then this is a serious alternative for fans of the Star Wars saga, Star Trek series and other camp '70s Sci Fi. For anyone not sure about the genre, the best I can describe it is "Top Gun" in outer space.

Mix up?As the previous reviewer said this is the 1978 moview and NOT the new BS serries which is also available on Amazon and appears to be the complete season. Not clear why its been mixed up.
As for the rating it depends what you are hoping for. If like me you are a fan of the new serries then you will be disappointed by this DVD. But if you love the original then this must be a valuable addition to your collection.

Anyone else confused? Now, from the other comments on this page, everyone is reviewing another DVD entirely.
The DVD shown and the details do not match up. The DVD shown is the limited cinema release of the first few episodes of the original 1978 series (which incidently was the one of the most expensive TV shows ever made at the time - presumably the cinema release was intended to wring as much money as they could from it). The actors names given, however are from the new (and much improved) series.
The reviews seem to be be from BSG 2.0 which I have not seen advertised anywhere but on Amazon.com - although I may be wrong - but given that the whole shbang will be with us shortly why would anyone want to buy half a series (I would say the same about Lost and the new series of Doctor Who - just relax and wait until the big box sets emerge before spending your hard earned cash)?
Anyway, if anyone is able to square this circle I would be grateful.
