Let the harmonies flow...
This is a strange compilation to be released in 2005 as it covers just four albums – Crosby Stills & Nash (1969), Déjà Vu (1970), CSN (1977) and Daylight Again (1982) – and none of the trio’s more recent work. Some might say that this is no bad thing when considering that this single disc includes no less than seven of the 10 songs from CSN’s classic, eponymous debut LP.

The one thing that everyone will say about Crosby Stills & Nash is how superb their harmonies are. Listening carefully to perfect examples such as Helplessly Hoping and Guinevere, it’s quite astounding to realise that the only musical backing to the choir of voices are one or two exquisite guitar parts.

Although CSN were one of the first supergroups, I always suspected that Stills was the leader. He was definitely the most talented musician and arranger and also wrote classic songs such as the epic Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and Carry On / Questions. It was also his backwards guitar part, recorded while the others were out, which transformed Nash’s Marakesh Express from a pleasant strum to a major hit.

Graham Nash’s other offerings for CSN were generally less essential – wispy tunes and rather trite lyrics which have not dated well though his harmony vocals are sublime. Crosby on the other hand specialised in more rocky numbers (Long Time Gone) and beguiling, minor key melodies (Guinevere).

Although I’ve played Greatest Hits a few times now, I’ll have to admit that the unfamiliar songs featured from the latter two LPs have made little impression so far. Maybe they will with further listens. Whether they do or not it's still great to have a compilation featuring the best tracks from the classic debut album and Déjà Vu. Let the harmonies flow…

The Classic Collection of "CSN"!
This remastered collection of "CSN"*Greatest Hits truly pays tribute to a band that will last forever. Nineteen classics grace this album and the re-mastering is amazing. Every song sounds fresh, from the seven-and-a-half minute, "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" to the anthemic, "Carry On/Questions". Of course, the clever ditties of "Our House" and "In My Dreams" are not forgotten and memories flow back with, "Marrakesh Express" and "Teach Your Children". The booklet is full of colorful collages and there is a complete rundown of each songs writer, vocalists and band player. There are an amazing number of famous studio musicians listed as well. Event the dates of each songs recording are included. The only real surprise is the tribute to 'Mama' Cass Elliot, "without whom most of this music may never have been made". Good job to Graham Nash and Joel Bernstein for compiling this masterpiece.

one for the fans
Certainly a collectors item for real fans of the band. Some of my favourites are missing, but i'm sure other fans will their choices. However, the release coincides with the tour. For those who have just discovered the band, then the album provides a snap shot of their brilliance

Classic seventies rock group
David Crosby (ex-Byrds), Stephen Stills (ex-Buffalo Springfield) and Graham Nash (ex-Hollies) joined forces in 1968 and together created some of the finest rock music of their generation, sometimes with the help of Neil Young (ex-Buffalo Springfield). Tracks featuring Neil are not included here even though there are three tracks here from Déjà vu, an album that featured Neil.

The set opens with Stephen Stills' tribute to Judy Collins (Suite: Judy blue eyes) and ends with Daylight again, which features Art Garfunkel (a most welcome guest). In between these two great tracks are seventeen others of comparable brilliance including Marrakesh Express (their only UK hit), Long time gone (about Bobby Kennedy), Wooden ships (a thought-provoking song) and Wasted on the way (an American top ten hit).

Superb singing and great musicianship were the hallmarks of Crosby Stills and Nash, with or without Young. Fans will always argue about what should have been included, but this CD is full-length (no room for any more) and all nineteen tracks justify their inclusion. As an introduction to their music, this is brilliant. Buy a Neil Young compilation, or the Déjà vu album, to hear Neil Young's contribution to the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
