Mixed bag
This was an odd season for me.

Some of the best episodes from all the seasons but let down a a number of weaker ones.

The Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny written and directed episodes are interesting in the way they contrast each other. Gillian Anderson produces the better episode by far. Duchovny's is very disappointing.

Still worth buying at the current prices - about £10

Not A Great Year In A Great Show's Life
I have greatly enjoyed revisiting all nine years of the TV show which I think most influenced me during the 1990s (ah, those were the years).

Having said that, with age and with swift viewing of episodes originally broadcast months apart, one can't help noticing supporting actors reappearing in different roles (somewhat disconcerting for the proper submersion in the narrative) and Mulder's endless harping on about the truth, becoming a bit of a bore. I know, I know: heresy.

Don't get me wrong, I love it. But Season Seven is a really tired year in the show's life. Everything has become disappointingly arch. Duchovny has clearly tired of it and there is way too much dialogue along the lines of, 'Hey, haven't we been here before', or, 'I know exactly what you're gonna say next, Scully.' It's all too knowing, and how could it be otherwise after so many years? Still, the opening double episode is very powerful and the three-way-bubblebath-telephone conversation in a later epidode is amusing. But there are rather too many lightweight episodes.

I'm glad the show continued and I think the later introduction of Doggett and Reyes greatly refreshed The X Files and offered the scope for more emotional scenes, especially for Anderson. Be warned therefore that No7 is a weak vintage, but it's worth having to complete the set. Anyone unhappy with Mulder's departure should stop at Season Six, given the deficiencies apparent throughout this mostly unfocused seventh season.

one of the best of the series
Ive been trying to keep some kind of record of each episode of the x-files (of which there were nine seasons) for some time now but with little success. This is a geeky thing for me to do firstly because of the series itself (sci fi, alien abductions anyone?) and also just trying to provide a summary for a show that had some 180 plus episodes is a little bit obsessive. The problem seems to be that I put on an episode (I have alot of time because I am now unemployed yes?) and then I potter around, fix a coffee, my hair, my lunch and have no idea as to what's gone on with the aliens. I can just about remember whether what Ive seen is either a 'mythological' or 'stand alone' episode. Mythological tales begun with Fox Mulder's sister being abducted by non- humans when he was a child and then general alien related stories which always effect Mulder and Dana Scully is some emotional and physical way. Stand alone episodes are about everything elses and can be silly, funny, ironic, frightening, complicated, dull; you get the point. They are always resloved in the same episode.

I'm currently watching Season 7 and have worked my way here starting with season 1 in season order. I watched the first 5 seasons when they originally aired. Looking at them now they seem dated and crude; the chemistry between Mulder and Scully which is really the defining point of the show, undeveloped. By season 6 I'd begun to actually stop experimenting with my hair and was sitting down watching the show. When I took out season 7 from the box I realised that I already knew many of the episodes from title and was very familiar to the plots and had enjoyed many of the episodes already. See our heros had really begun to fully inhabite their charaters and the emotional dynamic between the two had well truly taken off. I think this season is also the one in which Mulder leaves, to come back only for those 'Myth' episodes and the series final. So a beautifully acted season, funny and engaging and fully realised.

Underrated
This season is much better than many people make out. I think this is because, at the time it aired, fans were beginning to grow tired. I remember not liking it very much, but now I've watched it again, I really do rate it highly.

The writers earnestly tried to prepare for the end of the show, an event which would turn out to be three years away as it happened, but which looked likely even as 'Requiem' aired. As a result, some loose ends are tied up, and not many new questions are raised until the last episode. Still reeling from Two Fathers/One Son in series 6, there is possibly less mythology than any other season. This vacancy gave the show room to play with some new ideas: a story from the monster's perspective in Hungry, a Cops-style fly-on-the-wall documentary in X-Cops, a con-trick caper in The Amazing Maleeni, a genie with three wishes in Je Souhaite. The stand-alone episodes vary in quality a little more than in previous years, but there's some good stuff here.

Favourites:
Rush, Hungry, Sein Und Zeit/Closure, En Ami, all things, Requiem

Episodes I remember not liking, but enjoyed this time round:
Millennium, The Amazing Maleeni, Orison, X-Cops, First Person Shooter, Je Souhaite

Weak points:
Signs & Wonders - you'll see it coming
Fight Club - I can't believe Chris Carter wrote this one thinking it would be one of the last episodes of the show!
