The liner notes are excellent and apart from the obvious highlights (Don't stay away, Perfidia, Midnight confession and Living love, better known as One life to live, one love to give) other standouts are the deliciously rendered title track, It's rocking time, Nice time, some of her duets: Remember that Sunday (Alton Ellis) and Right track (Hopeton Lewis) and her early reggae nuggets such as Woman of the ghetto and You're like heaven to me. That producer Duke Reid let her record versions of obscure US hits was popular in Jamaica but some of those sound less than interesting for the reggae fan.
Phyllis Dillon has a wonderful voice and sang two all-time great songs - 'Don't Stay Away' and 'Perfidia'.
They make this cd worth 4 stars on their own, but the rest of the songs really are second-rate.
This is a wonderful album. I'm ashamed to say that I came to Phyllis Dillon rather late in my listening to music career - but I spent a holiday dancing in the West Indies to her wonderful music and just had to come back to the UK and find out who this was! The songs are beautifully sung - Phyllis is no Aretha Franklin, and her voice has a lovely innocent, wavering tone which turns me to jelly! The sleeve notes make me feel so guilty for being like the majority of music listeners and not appreciating this woman before her death in April 2004 - don't miss out!
