Completely unreliable - avoid like the plague
Like many other reviewers I've had loads of problems with this infuriating machine. When it works it's great but it will often switch off suddenly during a recording or on playing a disc so if you want to record something it's a complete gamble. A friend of mine who has a similar Philips model has had the same problems.

Also it will not recognise some discs which it has previously recorded on so you can't even access wg=hat you've recorded. I ahould have known I suppose because my Philips dvd player also developed a fault. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Quality DVD Recorder
I have owned a Philips DVDR 610 for about 2 years. Whilst there have been several glitches as mentioned by other reviewers, changing clock, periodic non working remote control and noisy operation for instance firmware upgrades have resolved them. I find it very easy to use and the recording quality even in m6 or m8 is very good indeed.Overall I have found this to be a quality product.

Excellent DVD recorder
Why so many poor reviews when this is clearly a great machine? I also own the LiteOn 5006 which records DVD+/-R/RW/CDR/RW/VCD/SVCD (another great buy but not all that fully featured). The Philips is great: it will record only + discs but is feature packed and will record NTSC from UK VCRs (ideal for transferring a NTSC video collection) and is the only one on the UK market that can do this (Pioneer use to but the Philips does). Great menu, great inputs, great machine!

PREVIOUS RATING AMENDMENT
This is my second attempt with the DVDR610 model. In the past, I have had good Philips products - but that was many years ago. Perhaps these latest purchases were manufactured late on Friday afternoon! In short, this machine is worse than useless and support from Philips is non-existent. I am still waiting to hear from them after writing more than three months ago. Don't buy it.

Cheap, +R/RW format only, but great spec
Take it from me - the Philips DVDR-610 is a stunning machine. I have had one for around 18 months and I have had no quibbles with it whatsoever. There were features on it which I tried to replicate recently when deciding to buy a second DVD recorder for the lounge and move the Philips to the bedroom. However, machines with seemingly greater spec can't do things that this Philips can.

To be specific, last week I bought a Sony RDR-GX210 which had a fault, but nevertheless was a good machine in terms of inputs. However it had to go back partly because its RGB passthrough was faulty (a common problem, apparently) and because it ignored widescreen switching signals.

I replaced that with a Panasonic DMR-ES15, which on the face of it is a great machine, recording on ALL DVD formats (-RAM, +/- R/RW, Dual Layer) - however, in many other respects, is limited.

The Philips DVDR-610 accepts RBG in. The Panasonic doesn't - although it PASSES THROUGH RGB, its SCART input only takes Composite or S-Video.

The Philips allows you to create chapter points of your own (rather than being forced to take 5 min. defaults). The Panasonic only allows you to do this on the expensive -RAM discs in which they seem to specialise; +/- discs can't have chapters set by the user;

The Philips - and this is important - takes notice of the WSS (Widescreen Switching Signal) and letterboxes the output accordingly if the TV is of 4:3 ratio. The Panasonic, and the Sony, would both just leave widescreen images in tall stretchy-vision, and on taking the discs recorded to friends with widescreen sets, the picture would STILL be stretched unless the TV was manually set to WIDE ZOOM. Philips discs however trigger the necessary switch to the TV - i.e. widescreen material is presented as a native widescreen signal.

The Philips makes excellent recordings even on the most extended playing modes. For instance, I will sometimes record hours at a time of rolling news coverage, and the M6 (EP) and M8 (SLP) modes still convey a very decent picture, considering. Much better than Sony and Panasonic machines on their corresponding modes.

So, I am looking to return my Panasonic DMR-ES15 for a SECOND Philips DVDR-610. The only quibble I have is that Chapter Skip and Search are on the same buttons, making it easy to sometimes skip a chapter when you meant to fast forward - however in the great scheme of things, this is a very small quibble indeed - this machine will handle being in any part of any AV chain and be able to act accordingly with full reliability. I like it.
