Perfect summer music from NZ
This album is the perfect way to chill out in summer. It has all those pacific reggae sounds that are so mellow, that draw you in and are so New Zealand. A world class act from the boys from Canterbury.

Barbecue Dub is back
Is New Zealand slightly behind in the music stakes? A contentious theory perhaps. Or are they just preserving music that has been hijacked by chart R'nB and boy-band culture here in the UK. Maybe they are just cooler than we are in keeping dub and 'intelligent drum & bass' alive.

Kiwi five piece Salmonella Dub have produced a head-bobbing album of euphonic electronic dub that we have heard before, but not for a while. Mellow dub with ska-style sax and horns and an underlying reggae rift are intertwined with Drum & Bass making the album a comforting listen.

Deep baselines in the tracks Pure and the excellent Octopus take you back to when D'nB was hitting the pirate radio stations hard and it is great to hear it all again. This antipodean band, who have been big in the Southern hemisphere for 10 years, are not big on lyrics with clichéd lines like 'Mash up the sound' on Dancehall Girl, but they do provide harmonious vocals on their more soothing tracks like the dreamy Bubble.

Primarily instrumental this album is reminiscent in part of Alex Reece circa 1996 and feels slightly out of date or even old school. However they do know how to bring a track together gradually fusing layers of breaks, electronic beats with horns and texturing them with harmonious vocals and their signature dub lines.

There is nothing experimental in Salmonella Dub's One Drop East but it would be a great soundtrack to a barbecue and a 'nice to have' in the collection not a 'need to have'.
