Fantastic!
In 1978 I was a teenager and only wish that I'd been present in the Royal Albert Hall for the concert on this DVD! It contains some excellent renditions from the James Last Orchestra and gives a great 'snap shot' of the late 70's dress code, accompanied by loads of bearded men! After playing 'Under the Moon of Love' James receives kisses from a number of ladies, one of whom looks like Margaret Thatcher's sister!

As a previous reviewer has said, this is vintage Last. The 1984 Irish concert is fantastic - the Irish know how to party!

Vintage James Last
This is vintage James Last, being a recording of a concert at the Royal Albert Hall dating from 1978. Sound quality leaves a little bit to be desired, even for its age, but the band's undisputed excellence in tightness and power of ensemble playing, and the trademark James Last sound (of the time) are still very much in evidence.

The material is mostly upbeat, with plenty of the party-type medleys, in an attempt to get the reserved British audience out of their seats and into the aisles for a dance, which they do eventually. It's all good fun, and there is additional amusement to be had in seeing some of the 1970s fashion, as displayed by the band's white suits, the female singers' voluminous dresses, and the co-ordination of some of the audience who do get up and jig about.

There are no classical numbers but at half way Georghe Zamfir is introduced to play pan-flute on "The Lonely Shepherd" and he stays, a little too long, to show the instrument's versatility, including bird impressions! This is followed by the band's guitarist, Benny Bendorff, singing "Mull of Kintyre" so badly it has to be seen to be believed; on the words "mist rolling in from the sea" a huge puff of dry ice envelopes both him and Herr Last, much to the amusement (or relief) of the crowd.

After these distractions it's back to normal with more of the foot-tapping, hand-clapping, get up and boogie stuff through to the end, a which point the audience, with a keen sense of awareness of where they are, give the band three cheers and sing "For he's a jolly good fellow"!!!

There is a half hour of "bonus material" - excerpts of an open air concert in Tralee, amazingly on a clear day in December 1984. Mainly Irish tunes are played, the show is produced by Irish television, and it's only spoiled by a commentary in German which intrudes over the start of each track. There is then a much more recent short interview with James Last himself, reminiscing about the London concerts, mostly about the trouble they had with the unions!

All in all, at nearly two and a half hours long, it helps while away a long winter evening when there's not much else doing, and it's great nostalgia.
