Rise and fall and rise of The RunawaysThe band 'The Runaways' were an all girl group that came about in the mid seventies, they had what you could call an interesting career in terms of line up changes, exploitation from the managers and the like but despite all of that they made some great music.
This is a movie that charts the rise of the band and catches up with most of the past members in an attempt to get their story.
This is a fabulous insight into what on the surface seemed like innocent marketing of teenage girls in a rock band but as the movie progresses we see it was far from innocent.
Names such as Lita Ford and Joan Jett tend to be the most well known to the viewer as they had further success during the 80's and 90's but it was the drummer that really should be a household name.
Sandy West was the backbone during all the crap and her playing back then was stunning for a teenage girl.
I am sorry to say that a drummers career after a band splits up is always the hardest to maintain so she has had a number of ups and downs in her life, despite all of this she remains the most inspiring when you see her interviewed and you can really sense her frustration at the lack of interest from the other girls to reform for a tour.
The last five minutes of this movie which shows Sandy pleading with the rest of the band to reform is heartbreaking. Set to the backdrop of Lita Fords 'War Of The Angels', this scene makes it worth the price of the DVD straight away.
Plainly put this is a stunning piece of warts and all film making and credit goes to Victory Blue the director who as viewers will see was infact a member of the band too.

The RunawaysThis dvd is fantastic. It is a film about dreams of rock`n roll by girls at 16. It is an incredible emotional trip. It`s much better than most rockumentarys, because this one trancends the form by being so raw and naked. There is not much music on this one, due to the non-coperation of Joan Jett, but this acctually helps the film to more time to explore the phenonemen that was The Runaways. Even though it all happened at such an early age, it certainly has left it`s mark on those involved. Later on i saw a clip by Judas priest who must have heard The runaways when they made Livin`after midnight and that made me realise that they were not just pioneers for riot girls and females in rock, but they updated punkrock just as much as The new york dolls did ( punk rock started in 65..). This is a rockumentary for people that are tired of these talking heads with platinum discs behind them with free access to the Betty Ford clinic.
