Amazon.co.uk Review
IElf/I is genuinely good. Not just ISaturday Night Live/I-movie good, when the movie has some funny bits but is basically an insult to humanity; IElf/I is a smartly written, skillfully directed, and deftly acted story of a human being adopted by Christmas elves who returns to the human world to find his father. And because the writing, directing, and acting are all genuinely good, IElf/I is also genuinely funny. Will Ferrell, as Buddy the adopted elf, is hysterically sincere. James Caan, as his rediscovered father, executes his surly dumbfoundedness with perfect aplomb. Zooey Deschanel, as a department store worker with whom Buddy falls in love, is adorably sardonic. Director Jon Favreau (ISwingers/I) shepherds the movie through all the obligatory Christmas cliches and focuses on material that's sometimes subtle and consistently surprising. Frankly, IElf/I feels miraculous. Also featuring Mary Steenburgen, Bob Newhart, Peter Dinklage, and Ed Asner as Santa Claus. I--Bret Fetzer/I

A film for all seasons
Elf is the best Christmas film ever, probably... br /It has me chuckling, even when I think of it. I find myself answering the 'phone, asking "What's your favourite colour?"; and when someone is annoying, if you call them a "cotton-headed ninny muggins", it really adds perspective to their crime! br /Most recently I sent copies to people I met, who had never seen it,... How Elf is that?

Cheesy but great fun
If you want a tongue-in-cheek family Christmas movie to get you in the seasonal mood then this is for you. Ferrell is awesome as the man/child of the title and there are some superb turns from the legendary James Caan as his cynical father, Peter Dinklage as an enigmatic writer and Zooey Deschanel as the kooky girl he falls in love with. Warm, witty and chock-full of killer lines, this is simply brilliant.

Promising Beginning; Good Ending. What Happened in the Middle?
Buddy (Will Ferrell) has been raised at the North Pole. Papa Elf (Bob Newhart) is very proud of his adopted son. There's just one problem, Buddy is a human, not an elf. In addition to his enormous size, he doesn't have the talents for toy making that all his friends do. br / br /When Buddy learns the truth, he sets out for New York to meet Walter (James Caan), his real father. Walter works for a children's book publisher, but his ideas aren't selling. He's also on Santa's (Edward Asner) naughty list. And Walter isn't thrilled to discover he has an adult son, especially one who insists on dressing like an elf all the time. Will he ever accept Buddy? Will Buddy ever fit in New York? br / br /I avoided this movie because I'm not a big Will Ferrell fan. This movie didn't exactly change my mind, but it wasn't as bad as I had feared. In fact, it started out very cute and charming with several great laughs. Then, Buddy moves to New York and things go downhill. I'm not a big fan of embarrassment humor, and that's pretty much what happens as we watch Buddy making a fool out of himself time and time again. I was cringing instead of laughing. br / br /Something happened, however, as we reached the climax. While it was completely predictable, I found myself caught up in it. And I found I cared for the characters. I wanted to see them all happy. Unfortunately, it did feel a little force, like it didn't quite follow from what came before. But at the time I didn't care. br / br /This isn't the Christmas classic it wants to be. It isn't a bad movie, but there are movies that are better.

Fun For Everyone
I don't usually enjoy Christmas movies, they really don't often make me feel that good - plus I feel the way they all have to have happy endings is just unreal, but then again, they are Christmas films, where we can just loose ourselves in a crazy tale. br / br /Elf is just that, a crazy tale of a baby who ends up inside Santa's bag of toys. He gets himself back to the North Pole, and is raised by the elves there. He soon realises he's not an elf, this makes him sad, so to get him to feel good about himself they send him to find his father. br / br /This is actually a breath of fresh air, Farrell as Buddy is great, his mix of craziness and pure cluelessness just makes it hilarious - and backed by a great acting team (Mary Steenburgen, Zooey Deschanel and Andy Richter) who just make this a joy to watch. Definitely aimed at the 11-14 age group, this film is very funny and has all the great things Christmas movies should have, happiness, sadness, excitement and most of all, a tale that's just right, not too sickening yet not too hard - oh and an underlying message and reminding us all the real values of Christmas. br / br /I highly recommend this, it's funny and heart-warming, plus it's good fun and you can watch it with the kids and gran without worrying that there will be swearing or violence. br / br /This goes into my top 3, alongside National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation [1989 and Home Alone [1990, which was my first favourite Christmas movie when I was 11. br / br /Go on, buy it, you have nothing to loose.
