FABULOUS! (...BUT FATALLY FLAWED!)
I nearly cried parting with £334.99 to pay for this thing but it was worth it to discover how television should be watched!!!

The ability to program soaps (daily), serials (weekly) and dramas (one-offs) all with meaningful names with thumbnails and the ability to archive stuff onto DVDs has revolutionised the way I watch tv and I can truly say the CASSETTE TAPE IS DEAD*... long live HDD/DVD.

It is possible to create music dvds, edited out boring ad-breaks, or compliling a dvd of the funniest adverts ever. You can import footage from a camcorder via the DV link or scart/AV links and edit out the boring bits of weddings etc.

In fact I was so delighted with this product it was only equalled by my DESPAIR when it decided to malfunction 3 months after purchase, just before the Christmas Movie period! It simply refused to record any new programmes, despite having plenty of room left on the hard drive.

Amazon kindly sent me a replacement unit, but now this too has ended up refusing to record and I can't even view the stuff I've taped. I'm trying to get a refund now and hope to try a different brand. I just wish there were more honest reviews at the time of purchase. Well done to Amazon for this feature.

*I'm off to the charity shop to buy back my humble VCR!

I would definately recommend
Amazon.co.uk
Shopping as it should be!

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.....................
I bought this unit after a lot of research and quite simply its the most unreliable electronic unit i have ever had. Its refuses to burn some titles from HDD to disk, suffers from crashing rather like a pc, and i am in the middle of returning it yet again for repair after it hisses from static and needs to be unplugged every time i use it to try and clear it temporarily. After just over a year it has been replaced once and repaired twice, and i know this is not an isolated problem from talking to others. What baffles me is that even after being given a brand new unit the problems still exist.
Spend your hard earned money elsewhere, please...........

poor
I looked at many reviews for this item before lashing out my hard earned dosh. After four months I suddenly had no sound and was without it for four weeks. Problem solved, but now the remote is faulty. For the price and maunfacturer, I expected good quality, but now returning item never to touch JVC again. Shame really, I liked the blue light !

Time to settle but then 5*
I brought my unit from Amazon (marketplace) and during the 90 day warrenty period it was swapped out x 3 and I almost gave up. However I then found that as it was < 3 months old I could register it with JVC who sorted it under warrenty. The unit from JVC has worked 100% since its arrival and does everything that I want both for TV and for Home Video which is my other passion. As a result I have taken the JVC 5 year extended warrenty although it now looks as if I won't need it.

Great machine which I truly would not be without.

"Loading" problems
I have to echo the reservations of one of the reviewers below with respect to the quality of these hard drive recorders. When they work, they work quite well with editing and burning to DVD being fairly intuitive - in spite of the manual! However, having gone through one in late December - rapidly replaced (to their credit)by Amazon with another one in late January which is now also unuseable - I feel uneasy about risking a third one! Both machines worked fine for a few weeks before indulging in random crashes either in the middle of deleting files or during the "burning to DVD" process before just sticking in the initial loading cycle. Incidentally, I did buy an 80gb version through a High Street retailer back in July 2005 and that machine has been back recently for a replacement hard drive too. For a machine that has been on the market for a couple of years, these sort of problems should just not happen. The ability of the machine to change channels on Sky, before recording, was what particularly attracted me to this model but, in hindsight, I should have spent more time looking at other people's experiences with the machine before ordering!
