Lyrical adventures beyond every world
I am completely new to Aesop Rock and I have no idea why it has taken me so long to discover this gem. Have been listening to Cannibal Ox for a couple of years, if you liked "The cold vein" then you will enjoy this, possibly even more inventive (lyrically anyway) release. I went on to but "Labor days" and "Music for earthworms" but this one still stands out as my favourite by a very long way.

Jabberwocky superfly?
For me this mini-album is a bit of a mixed bag- the first track is about as mainstream - sounding as Aesop gets (i.e not very), and it's actually great. "Holy smokes" is what to my mind, he does best - taking an interesting subject matter (the Catholic Church and religion in general in this case) and MC-ing about it, whilst using truly original musical ideas. Sometimes on this album it just felt a bit like some of the tracks were lacking in ideas and direction. It's no coincidence that the two track's I've mentioned as highlights are both produced by Blockhead, his long-time collaborator - all the tracks he produces are as good as you would expect. Unfortunatlely the same is not true of the other four tracks, but having said that, they are still miles more interesting than your average hip-hop track. Even though I love El-P's work and CamuTao is a great MC, on "Rickety Rackety" it all feels a bit too much - the genius of Aseop (and Blockhead) to me seems to often lie in knowing what to leave out as much as what to put in. Lyrically speaking, Aesop is as original and exciting as ever, and the addition of an 88 page book of lyrics past and present (plus some photos that look far too much like a fashion shoot, but let's skip over that...) does make this a nice little release until a full LP comes along. I'm hoping Aesop doesn't try to pursue his "harder" sound like some of the tracks here much further, because at the moment the results are a bit patchy - BUT he's still one the most interesting talents out there, so I can't really gripe that much. Go and buy this, and overall, if you like Aesop, you should enjoy it, as much for the lyrics as the music (which is both a good and a bad thing, in this case...)

Great idea well executed, and the music is tremendous too!
First off i'm a huge Aesop fan, but i dont let that cloud my vision. The presentation of this product is amazing, good stylistic packaging and artwork throughout. If you are lucky enough to get the lyric book before they run out, then lucky you, you are in for a mind twisting adventure of deep meanings and cool lyrical combinations that spans his entire Def Jux career (minus "Appleseed" and "Music for Earthworms" and any other side project). If you're not so lucky then obviously you'd be more interested in the audio. Although I prefer the old grimier style of aesops stuff from the earlier days (pre "Bazooka Tooth"). But the new shiney production suits his style well and his all-conquering voice is finally being harnessed to smoothly flow over the beats rather than creating an ear-like fireworks display. I've learned to love Aesop in a new way, which is fantastic.

Overall this EP has a consistant high standard of music that wont dissappoint, 4 stars. With the pretty lyric book and sleeve 5 stars.

Personal Favs - Number Nine, Holy Smokes, Rickety Rackety.
