Spanning almost a decade of Rohmer's work, these films encapsulate his focus on moral messages to us all. Each film is delightful in its own way, 'en ete' and 'en hiver' complement each other by focusing mainly around the (mainly romantic) relationships of four characters, whilst 'Printemps' and 'd'automne' have more developed plotlines and are more rewarding as such due to the richly developed characters.
In this way, the most interesting of all the films is 'Conte d'Automne' purely because of the focus on the two excellent female leads. The story focuses on Isabelle who takes it upon herself to find a date for her friend Magali who runs a vineyard. A large part of the film takes place over the stunning landscape of Magali's business and enhances the conversations and interactions between the characters. My favourite however has to be 'Conte d'ete' because of Gaspard's initial outlook on his life and how this is altered through meeting Margot and their many coastal wanderings and discussions throughout his summer stay. The backdrop of Brittany's beaches and coastal paths also raises the beauty of the piece.
Well worth a viewing, toute l'annee ronde!
