Amazon.co.uk ReviewMichael Buble's assured debut and the tireless year of globe-trotting touring he spent promoting it elevated the 20-something Vancouver native into the first rank of pop crooner revivalists. His sophomore studio follow-up largely turns on the same formula that helped make his considerable vocal prowess so attractive to mainstream audiences, mixing the nigh flawless, if expected Sinatra-channelling ("I've Got You Under My Skin") with more playful and inviting renditions of pop standards like the Gershwin's "A Foggy Day in London Town," "Feeling Good," "Try A Little Tenderness" and Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin." But it's the eclectic mix of more contemporary material the singer seasons them with--apt tribute to Buble hero Bobby Darin--that keeps him walking the narrow tightrope between artistic intrigue (a blues-tinged vamp of Holland-Dozier-Holland's "How Sweet It Is," Leon Russell's lovely "Song For You," with a guest turn by Chris Botti) and the kitsch-laden abyss ("Quando, Quando, Quando"'s Euro-centric duet with Nelly Furtado, a ring-a-ding-fling with the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" that echoes fellow Canadian crooner/rival Matt Dusk's more successful flirtation with Lennon-McCartney). Arranger/producer Tommy LiPuma offers Buble a welcome swinging jazz showcase on "The More I See of You," a bracing respite from the rest of producer David Foster's slick production. Easy listening jazz-pop albumMichael's music doesn't easily fit into any category. My local store files them in the easy listening section but they could just as easily be filed in the jazz section. Not that jazz purists are likely to get excited about his music - they almost certainly won't - but there is a jazzy feel to this album nevertheless.

br /The songs here reflect Michael's mixed influences, with some songs that you would expect to find on jazz albums (Foggy day in London town, The more I see you, I've got you under my skin), R+B songs (You and I, Try a little tenderness, How sweet it is) and mainstream pop oldies (Can't buy me love, Save the last dance for me). There's even a country song (You don't know me), though Michael may well have selected it after hearing the famous Ray Charles version. The opening title track (an Anthony Newley song), Quando quando quando (a song that became a UK sixties hit for Engelbert Humperdinck, here performed as a duet with Nelly Furtado) and Home (the only original song here) complete a wonderful album.

br /Michael and his musicians give all the songs an easy listening jazz-pop treatment. On this particular album, my favorite track is probably Save the last dance for me, which is a little different from all the other versions I've heard but sounds great.
br /
br /You might say that Michael doesn't have anything really different to offer, but there is a huge market for this type of music and Michael is clearly among the best contemporary singers within that market. While this is my first album of his, I don't expect it to be my last.

as unoriginal as they comeOh dear! This plays like some tribute album or other. If your benchmark is Sinatra/King Cole/Torme or any other of the greats, then what on earth is the point of all this? True, there are some wonderful songs, but Buble doesn't bring anything new to them in the way that say, Shamus Dark does when he breathes new life into Angel Eyes etc. If you don't like the modern approach of Dark, then stick with originals - they still can't be beat!
