Just a really fantastic anime
I recently wrote a review for the Ralph Ellison novel `Invisible Man' and started it by saying that I was unsure of what to write. Well, it's the same with Neon Genesis Evangelion. What can I say that hasn't already been said about this masterpiece of a show? Frankly, I don't think there is anything new to say, so, basically what I'll do is just repeat it all but change the phrasing. That should work.

It's an anime about mecha and the young teenagers that have to use them to save the world from these `aliens' (I think, but have no idea because it is all far too complicated) who have been dubbed Angels. They have to deal with the psychological stresses of such a confounding responsibility, as well as the everyday interactions and social expectations that afflict Japanese teenagers. Also, if all that wasn't enough for our young heroes, there is some whole other thing which I didn't really get about evolution and... stuff.
Well, as you can clearly tell form my comprehensive and thoroughly extensive description of the story line... I didn't exactly get it all first go round. I might get more next time I watch them though. Huh, fine, I give in. Okay, so it's not the clearest story line ever written; but you know what? None of that matters because this show is brilliant anyway. You really don't have to get half of it to enjoy it because it is such a fantastic anime. The fight scenes are well animated, well choreographed, and often with incredible music to them; including some nice Beethoven towards the end, which I definitely appreciated, and fit in perfectly with the stunning fight it was backing. The slice of life parts of the show are phenomenal too, with the main characters living arrangements often proving to be a wicked source of hilarity. All the characters are superbly voiced by the Japanese actors, I always watch with subtitles, and the subtitles themselves, while moving a little too hectic sometimes, are well written and read pretty easy. The story line, while complicated, can be followed to a degree, and by the end you really will care about all the characters and what happened to them. Though, I'm not really sure what did happen to them in the end.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a show worshipped probably by as many Japanese people as worship god, and while those silly people are wasting their time, if you by this you'll be signing up to the church of Evangelion in no time, and rightly so! You see, there are so many little things that get you hooked throughout the twenty six episodes, and you're not even sure it's happening to you most of the time. Before you know it, you're watching nothing but this show in some desperate race with yourself to finish it before your house explodes or something. It's a show where you absolutely have to know what happens next or it's gonna kill you. Also, and this is important when it comes to anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion has maybe the best theme tune ever written. Ever. I swear you have never heard anything as catchy or as cool sounding in your whole life. It just gets you, and suddenly you are singing along even though it's in Japanese and you don't know the words, and you're dancing all over you couch to the music. Simply, it rocks; like everything Evangelion.

Okay, now to deal with the DVD itself. Presented here are all twenty six episodes of the show plus four directors cut episodes. There might have been some special features as well but I normally can't be bothered to watch them so I'm not sure. Every episode looks and sounds great, and the box it comes in is very sturdy. Remarkably sturdy actually. I was very impressed with it. Also, could you please remember that this version is region one so you're gonna need a multi-region player to watch them. Thank you.
Right, all in all this is a fantastic anime. It's a classic and if you expect to be taken seriously by anyone who is even remotely tuned in to the anime scene you need to own it and have watched them. Also, it might help to at least pretend like you know what the heck they're about.

Thank you for reading my review.
