It has a very nice learning curve for the missions, and if you follow them carefully you'll learn to do things like formations and escorts in no time at all.
Unlike FPS games there's way more than your own survival at stake, you have to ration your time between the ships you're meant to protect or attack. Mission goals have to be completed if you want to advance, so you have to think about what you're going.
The setting is great, how can you get better than the original Star Wars trilogy? It also feels much more like being in the films because the game's setup means many of your actions are identical to what characters did in the movies("Set your shields double front" etc).
There's also a nice RPG element with the secret society that tries to recruit you as your career advances. There are also a great many plot twists and turns along the way, some of them EXTREMELY interesting.
If you enjoy Star Wars and want a proper plot instead of a load of disconnected missions, this is one of the last games to get. Nowadays space combat seems to have been abandoned... :(
